The only good part about working all night was getting to see the sunrise with him by her side. Even during their most stressful nights, he somehow always managed to find someone to hold the place together for the fifteen minutes it took them to get to the roof and watch the sun sneak above the horizon to bring the start of a new day. He would always take her hand in the stairwell, leading her weary form up to the roof access. At the top of the stairs, he would take her face between his hands and kiss her gently, promising that no matter how much longer their day lasted, the next few minutes would be just for them.
It was always a little bit cold when they stepped outside and being up on the roof meant the wind whipped a little more than she would have liked. He always smirked and reminded her that he had said to bring a jacket before sliding his arm around her shoulders and drawing her into his side, lending his warmth to her. The second of third time it happened, he figured out that her forgetfulness was intentional, but she knew he loved getting the rare opportunity to feel like her protector, so he never remembered to grab a jacket for her.
They would stand together, arms curled around each other, watching as the first rays of the day broke through the clouds. If it had been a particularly bad night, he would brush his hand through her hair and kiss her forehead. She would do her best not to fall asleep standing up, and he would murmur promises of going home together and falling into bed and not leaving until they'd made up for their lost rest.
As always, once the sun breached the horizon, his arms dropped and he gave her one last kiss before taking her hand and leading her back downstairs and into the fray.
End.
