At Castle Oblivion, no one makes a sound, save Demyx. Everyone else tiptoes around Marluxia and his roses, like they're fragile or something. Demyx thinks it's hilarious. He wonders if anyone else realizes how stupid they're being and how they play into Marluxia's trap. So he plays his sitar when the quiet gets too much, and notices how no Nobody ever complains. They watch and they listen. They've gotten good at that.

Roxas watches him with a careful indifference that hides his questions, which are, incidentally, the same questions everyone once had. What was Demyx doing there in an Organization full of killers? Roxas never shows anything, just comes and leaves as he chooses, sometimes only hearing the middle of a piece.

Axel pretends he isn't listening, lying on the couch with his eyes closed, feigning sleep. But Demyx knows better, can hear the arrhythmic breathing that catches when the music swells. He has an ear for such things. He smiles when Axel's there.

Marluxia only sticks his head in the room once in a while to give him a disapproving glare that he never meets. Vexen, Lexaeus, and Zexion never listen, never watch. They don't like him at all, though he could swear that Zexion was listening outside of the room that once, but he doesn't have the courage to ask.

His favorite, though, is Larxene, when she deigns to come (which is more often than she would like to admit). She watches him with open eyes, letting him know she's judging him. There is none of Roxas' fabricated apathy, masking contempt. Axel's embarrassment finds no place here, but neither, to Demyx's regret, is his rapt attention to the music. Larxene does listen, and has a surprisingly good ear, he admits, but only listens for wrong notes, wincing when they come. She smiles a little, if he's especially good, but leaves the instant she sees a flash of red outside the door.

When that happens, he plays to the mirror, watching his reflection carefully. It is in this way that he learns to control the water clones, and to find the weaknesses in his guard that the others always exploit. When Axel can no longer defeat him without thinking, his eyes sharpen and his listening begins to change into Roxas' watching, and Demyx stops smiling.

So he's relieved when Xemnas calls him away from the Castle, relieved when he finally meets Sora a year later, and wants to ask him about Oblivion but doesn't, because he doesn't want to know if Axel and Roxas stopped watching each other through him, if Larxene died before Marluxia or vice versa. He's relieved when everything goes as planned and he evaporates before the keyblade bearer with a smile that stings like Larxene and smolders like Axel, because he's always been a good learner.

All of his practice finally paid off.
