Playing With Fire

Chapter 2

She was back in the Eschar room, but she wasn't. She was somewhere up above, looking down at herself, Toby as a baby, and Jareth. The dream Sarah was running all around, trying to get to Toby but Sarah could see it was going to hopeless. Jareth was leaning in doorways, walking on roofs-or were they ceilings? -And singing to the dream Sarah. For the first time Sarah heard the words.

How you turn my world you precious thing

You starve and near exhaust me

Everything I've done I've done for you

I move the stars for no one

You've run so long you've run so far

Your eyes can be so cruel

Just as I can be so cruel

Though I do believe in you

Yes I do

I…can't…live…within…you

She was standing on nothing, nothing at all. Everything around her was black. It was like she was nowhere.

"Sarah."

Sarah turned around and saw…nothing.

"Arrrggg! Don't do this to me Jareth!"

"Sarah."

She whirled around again and banged her nose into something metal. Backing up she focused her eyes to what was in front of her. A moon. A crescent moon. Raising her eyes higher Sarah gazed at the owner of the medallion. Piercing mismatched eyes met her own. Jareth. Sarah opened her mouth.

"What are you doing here?"

His face was unreadable as he replied. "Did you want me to leave?"

Sarah was about to send a stinging retort when a deafening explosion and shill ringing came up from just behind her. She fell down with a scream, and found herself falling, falling…..

Brrrrrrrrrrrrrriiiiinnnnnnnggggggggg! Smack! Crash!

"Alarm clock number 42, rest in peace. Or pieces. It doesn't matter."

Another completely miserable night. Sarah stumbled out of bed to the refrigerator. Nothing but last night's soda and a pizza slice. Sarah sat at her folding table remembering when she didn't believe that pizza could be eaten for breakfast. She still didn't quite believe she did it every other day. Sarah sighed. Despite her boyfriend's advice, she hadn't slept very well. Nightmares. She couldn't remember any of them, but somehow she thought they were important. Oh, well. If they really were important she was sure she would remember later……
