Setsuna was born Soran Ibrahim on April 7th, 2291. Ali-Al-Sacchez abandoned his gang of child soldiers to die when he was 10, leaving him totally alone but also freeing him from his life of fighting for an extremist cause he no longer believed in. He had joined them when he was 8 in the year 2299. After Krugis was absorbed by Azhadistan, he lived in a refugee camp. He moved from camp to camp until he arrived at one of the two official United Nations Refugee Camps. Having been in place since the fighting began several years prior, the camp was fairly well established for a refugee camp – they had several wells around the camp to get water for drinking, cooking, bathing, and laundry. Bars of soap are given out on a weekly basis every Friday. Schools were erected for the children with what appeared to be wooden beams and tarp, where displaced teachers and university students teach the children basic math and reading on a large dry-erase board. Meals are given out twice a day, usually consisting of little more than rice with lentil soup. A lucky few live in pre-fabricated trailers, but these are few and far between. Most people live in large UN tents and must sleep on the ground. Upon arriving at the camp refugees are given some basic supplies – each person gets a blanket, bowl, spoon, and cup and each family a bar of soap, and each school-aged child gets a small package of school supplies containing a dry erase board, a small cloth, and a set of dry erase markers. Meals are handed out for three periods of time a day and usually consisting of rice with lentils or beans and tea. Schools take an hour long break and get their own food line separate from the adults and small children.

Soran arrived with little more than the dirty clothes and rifle on his back – the rifle was promptly confiscated by the camp. Since he was an orphan, he was given to one of the orphanages within the camp. Having not looked up into the sky in time to see the Gundam, he was little more than a wandering orphan and former child soldier without a purpose. Living in the refugee camp was both a blessing and curse – he was provided for, but without a home to go back to and no craft or trade by which to earn a living, he would be stuck in the camps indefinetally. He knew how to fight and that was it. His parents had been craftsmen but he didn't want to do that; it only reminded him of how he'd been brainwashed into killing his own parents. Yet at the same time, he didn't know what there was left to fight for.

Al-Saachez led the KPSA, which was a group of guerilla child soldiers that Ali brainwashed to fight a war "for God and country". Some children were lured, while others were outright kidnapped. Ali Al Saachez had adults fighting for him as well, mostly teenagers and young adults – it was these older fighters who were the commanders of the individual units and kept everyone in line. If a child tried to flee, they were the one to kill the escapee. They carried out the orders, all directly from Ali Al-Saachez.

There were eight other boys in Soran's unit, all of whom were taken from Soran's home village. They were used to carry weapons and ammo and used as guards, cooks, slaves, and messengers. They were frequently strapped up with suicide vests and sent out to their deaths in the name of God and Country – to protect their homeland from the government forces that were trying to destroy their traditional way of life and impoverish everyone, and in the name of their religion.
