The Team were walking - exhausted - into the living room in the cave, after a huge team-up between the League and the younger heroes to stop the newly-reformed Injustice League from destroying the world.
They stopped short at the sight of all of Batman's previous partners sitting there - all of them; from Tomorrow Knight, to Red Hood, to Oracle.
This was pretty strange - all of the Bats gathered together at one place. Last any of them had checked, they all looked after (and kept to) their own cities.
Everyone turned to Robin for an explanation, only to see he had gone white, and was staring at his siblings in horror.
Nightwing stood up fluidly, making his way over to the youngest teen with ease. He bent down, and led him back to where the rest of the Bats were waiting.
Once he was standing next to his family, Red Robin put his hand on his shoulder as a show of support.
Tomorrow Knight took a deep breath. "As you all know, the Injustice League tried to destroy the planet today, and were all stopped. But... Not without sacrifice." At this he broke off, and Batgirl pulled him into a hug.
Oracle rolled forward and continued. "We were helping Batman defeat the Joker," at the Joker's name, Red Hood clenched his fists, "and... We were so close to succeeding. Then... Joker had a gun. None of us even realised..." At this point, she was crying so heavily she had to stop.
This time, it was Nightwing who continued, his voice emotionless. "The bullet hit Father in the side, slipping through a chink in his armour. It went through his left lung, before lodging in his heart. He bled out in minutes." Nightwing stepped back, turning away.
Robin was openly sobbing in Red Robin's arms at this point, with the latter also crying. Red Hood looked as if he were about to punch someone, and Oracle (who was the same age as them, despite acting older) was crying next to Black Bat, who was acting as emotionless as usual, but her hands were in fists. Tomorrow Knight and Batgirl were shaking in each other's arms.
The team looked horrified. Artemis was crying into Kid Flash, as was Miss Martian into Superboy. Aqualad looked paler than usual, and Zatanna and Rocket were trying to comfort each other, and not making much progress.
"S-so all the B-bats are taking a week off, a-and Superman is l-looking after G-Gotham." Batgirl stuttered out between sobs, "We- We thought you'd like to k-know." She managed, before breaking down in her brothers arms again.
The team watched in shock as the rest of the Bats left, leaving the team alone.
