The sun shined high above me as I laid peacefully, on the grass. The sound of cars rushing by, and people talking filled my ears as I lay.
Anita laid with her head on my chest. Her dark hair was pressed to my face, the sweet smell of lavender filled my nose as I inhaled deeply. Her small body was curled up against mine, the slow and even rise and fall of her chest would have led me to believe she was sleeping if her fingers had not been toying with my own.
She loved it here. Anita loved America. Why she did, I would never understand. But for some reason, she did. I knew better than to argue with her. So, for now I wouldn't, I was too happy now. I closed my eyes and smiled.
"Bernardo?" Anita murmured into my chest. My eyes opened slowly.
"Hmm?" I smiled as I touched the small box in my pocket. Part of me was amazed she hadn't noticed it yet. That same part was amazed that I hadn't blown it.
"Thank you." she sighed, mindlessly rubbing circles on the back of my hand.
"For what?" I smiled. She turned her head to face mine. I couldn't help but stare into her beautiful eyes.
"For coming here, for putting up with everything, for doing the things that you do. Thank you for everything Bernardo." she smiled.
I reached my hand up to gently stroke her cheek. My fingers trailed gently across her face, remembering the soft angle of her jaw, the warmness of her cheek, the gentle curve of her lips.
"I do it for you, I do everything for you. You are the only reason I am here. I love you." I whispered as my lips pressed against her forehead.
"I love you too." She smiled back at me.
"Good, I was hoping you would say that." I pulled us both to our feet and gathered every last bit of courage I had.
"Bernardo, what are you doing?" she giggled.
"Anita, I love you more than anything else in the world. You mean everything to me, and I cannot imagine being without you." I looked into her eyes.
"Bernardo?" Anita asked, more concerned this time.
I pulled the box out of my pocket and got down on one knee. A look of shock passed her face.
"Anita, I love you so much. Will you marry me?" I looked up hopefully.
Anita let out a giggle and took my hand.
"Of course I will marry you." she smiled. All the fears and worries that had filled me in the past few days seemed to subside, all I was left with was a sense of happiness and relief.
I scooped Anita up into my arms and twirled her around in triumph. Most likely causing a scene.
"Yes! Yes! Yes!" I shouted, "you said yes!"
"Bernardo! Put me down!" she laughed. I gently set her down and held her head in my hands, looking deeply into her eyes before pulling her into a kiss.
"Bernardo?" Anita pulled away, "did you not think I would say yes?" she pouted.
"No, I just did not know what I would have done if you had said no." I smiled.
"How could I ever say no to you." Anita whispered.
I smiled before once again pulling her into a deep slow kiss. And with that, I felt on top of the world.
