Chapter One
Sora sat on the dock with Riku, his feet hanging in the water. The friends were quiet, listening to the waves.
"Sora!" A voice called from behind them. Both boys turned around to see Kairi running twards them. Sora and Riku smiled, but Sora's far a much happier smile. Kairi sat down on the edge of the dock, in between the boys. Sora gently slipped his arm around her shoulders and pulled her close. Riku, feeling very much like a third wheel, stood.
"I'll leave you two lovebirds alone," Riku said with a smirk. It was no secret that, as soon as he and Sora had come back from the realm of darkness, Sora had hooked up with Kairi. They had shared the paupu fruit and everything. Riku didn't mind his two best friends being a couple, but he hated feeling like a third wheel. He stuck his hands in his pockets and sighed, walking home.
Kairi looked over at Sora. "Sora?" She asked softly. Sora turned to look at her.
"What's up?"
"I was just thinking... Do you think we'll be like this forever? I mean, the king is bound to come and get you and Riku eventually..."
"Kairi, don't worry about that right now." Sora gave Kairi a smile. "Right now, it's just you and me and the sunset, got it?" Kairi gave a small nod and leaned against Sora. When he was sure she wasn't looking at him, Sora let his smile fade. He knew very well that Kairi was right, but he didn't want to admit that or worry her.
Two days later, Kairi was waiting in the front of Sora's house for him. When he stepped outside, Kairi instantly knew something was wrong.
Sora was wearing the outfit the fairys had given him, and his Kingdom Key was in his hand. Kairi's eyes went wide when Riku followed Sora out, wearing his Organization 13 cloak and carrying his keyblade, Road to Dawn, too. Kairi swallowed.
"Sora?" Her voice was barely a whisper. "What's going on?" Sra gently hugged her.
"I'm so sorry, Kairi." He murmured. "The king needs us." He pulled away and gave her a small smile. "But we'll come back, I promise."
"Sora!" Kairi protested. "Sora, please let me come, too?" Sora shook his head.
"Kairi, no. I'm not going to put you in danger again!" Sora said gently. Kairi's eyes were suddenly filled with tears.
"You promised." She whispered. "You promised me that next time you went, we'd go together!" Her voice had risen to a scream as she cried. "Sora, please! Don't leave me he-" Sora silenced her with a firm kiss. When he pulled away, he smiled.
"I'm sorry, Kai." And with that, he and Riku walked down the steps and out to the beach. Kairi watched them, and, when she blinked, they were gone.
