Jet's Death

A muffled boom! echoed around the chamber. Dust flew into the air, blocking Aang's vision of the scene. The man standing across the room was completely forgotten as the dust cleared and Aang saw what had become of his friend.

"Jet!" He exclaimed, rushing toward the boy lying flat on the ground. He threw himself to his knees beside him, staring down at him. Jet looked, if anything, peaceful and perfectly content.

The silence was broken by the sound of grating stone. A large section of the wall simply flew outward, admitting Sokka, Katara and Toph into the room. When Katara saw Jet lying on the floor, she knew immediately that something was wrong.

"Jet!" She cried, rushing forward. Aang stood up, and as Katara threw herself to her knees beside Jet, he looked on, looking very glum. Katara's hands were covered by a thin coating of water, and she slowly moved them over Jet's chest. "This isn't good…" She said softly. "Come on, we need to get help!" She fixed her eyes on the others who stood next to Aang, determination obvious in them.

Jet's two friends stood over him, looking sadly down at him. "You guys need to get out of here! We'll look after Jet!" Katara was not going to leave Jet, but he smiled reassuringly up at her.

"Go, I'll be alright." He said. He took Katara's hand, squeezing it gently.

Katara returned his gaze steadily, squeezing his hand as well. As the moments ticked by, she became more and more determined not to leave Jet. She just couldn't! But, Longshot spoke up then.

"Go, we'll take care of him." He said, no emotion in his face. It was hard to tell if he was worried or not, but he must have been. Jet was their leader after all.

Katara hesitated a bit longer, then slowly leaned forward and pressed her lips against Jet's. Jet returned the soft kiss, and as she drew away, gave her hand one last squeeze. "Go, I'll be fine." He said.

Struggling up from the ground, Katara and the others rushed away, leaving Jet and his gang alone. As they walked, Toph uttered two quiet words. "He's lying…" Those words broke the stillness like an explosion. But when Katara turned back, Sokka restricted her, pulling her along with them.

"Jet!" She cried, struggling against Sokka. "Jet, promise me you'll be okay!" But as she paused in her struggling, all Jet did was shake his head.

"I can't…" He whispered. And then he was lost to view as they exited the chamber. Tears poured down Katara's cheeks and she calmed in her brother's arms. Jet was gone. There was nothing she could do about it.
