Well, it seems that I am writing a holiday pairing for everyone (aside from Blackrose and anyone reading my holiday fics that feels that their pairings are not covered. If you feel this way, e-mail me and I'll do my best :P )
The whole idea came from a co-worker telling me about a suspension that she has.
It was always freezing in the deserts of Nevada. It was made even colder by the fact that it was winter and Kat was covered from head to toe in sweat from chasing down the latest goon of the week who'd attempted to rob the biggest casino in Reno.
It really didn't help her feel any better that Max was STILL whining about the athletes New Year party that they'd both missed out on because the stupid FBI has decided to "de-brief" them. Sighing and checking her watch Kat noticed with slight annoyance that it was already three hours into the new year and she hadn't eaten since noon the last day. In reminder of the pizza bar promised at the party her stomach made an embarrassing noise and Kat made a mental note to grab something on the way out. She glared at Max, daring him to say anything about the noise he must have heard in the very un-heated hallway the two were walking to finally escape the building. He didn't even look her in the eye, probably also tired out from convincing the FBI to not arrest Team Steel for "hindering" the mission. Or maybe he hasn't really heard her, as he was still complaining.
"- I mean, the ride down here was longer then taking down the goons," he grumbled as the two switched to yet another freezing hallway. This one was better lit though, so they didn't feel like the middle of an horror movie. "I can't believe we're going to keep having to butt heads with the FBI all year."
"Huh?" Kat's sleep deprived brain attempted to connect the FBI and rest of the year together. She didn't think the organization was getting on their nerves that much, though maybe Max was still stinging from being locked in a room for a while?
"Oh?" He flashed a tired grin at her. "You don't know? Guess I couldn't tell you then." He laughed softly as she slugged him lightly on the arm in an attempt to get the younger ex-agent to talk then walked faster; forcing Kat to semi-jog in so she could still be right next to him.
"Come on, tell me if it's so great," she said lightly in an attempt to battle the fatigue that was starting to overwhelm her. When Max just laughed (mockingly this time) she threw her left leg out, causing him to yelp in surprise as he fell on his butt. He grinned cheekily up at her and stuck out his tongue.
"Well, if you really want to know.. It's too bad for you," He smirked causing the older woman kicked him lightly on the side.
"If you don't tell me right now I'm going to hide your generator until you do," She threatened placing both hands on her hips and attempting to look like she really meant it.
"It's just some stupid thing I heard about in High school. Supposedly whatever you do on the the first day of the year you're going to be doing for the rest of that year."
"People still believe in crap like that?" Kat sniffed back.
"Well, it has some grain of truth to it," came the good natured reply.
"Oh please Steel," Kat rolled her eyes, "People only say that kind of stuff to sleep with someone."
"So.. We're NOT going to be battling evil villains in a big city anymore this year?" Max smirked as he won the aggrument causing Kat to frown back. She really hated losing, even if it was something as pointless as this augment.
Still…..
"Ok, fine" she turned leaned down, her lips barely touching his but able to feel the way his breath suddenly quickened. Smirking in her victory Kat stood back up again and flashed a smile at the younger man. "Lets see if that happens again anytime this year." Still smirking Kat strode down the hall and down the stairs. Maybe this year wouldn't end up that bad.
