Remus hid behind a column right next to the library, listening to Filch talking to Mrs. Norris just a few feet away. He looked around the corridor, hoping to find somewhere better to hide. It was at times like these when he wished he was the one with the invisibility cloak: he, James and Sirius had been on the run from Filch when they had accidentally gotten split up.

Then he saw it, an ajar door that led to an abandoned classroom. He ran as fast as he could into the classroom, and once inside he shut the door carefully, making sure it didn't make enough sound for Filch to know he was there.

Remus sighed with relief: he could hide in here until he was sure Filch was gone. He surveyed the room, seeing nothing but dusty old desks and cabinets, but then in the far corner of the room he saw a mirror. He advanced towards it. Across the top it said 'The Mirror of Erised'.

Remus had been so busy reading the writing that he hadn't yet looked at his reflection, and when he did he was a bit taken aback. The reflection showed himself... but with a full moon hovering over his head, which was impossible since a moon could never be indoors. Well, unless maybe it was charmed.

He turned around just to make sure, but seeing nothing his gaze returned to the mirror. He realized that in the reflection he was normal... and there was a full moon, but that couldn't be right: whenever there was a full moon he transformed into a werewolf.

He studied his reflection for some time after that, though it wasn't for another half an hour that he realized what it meant. The mirror showed him his deepest desire; thus, its name, 'Erised', was 'desire' spelt backwards. So that must mean that his deepest desire was to not be a werewolf. Tears ran down Remus's cheeks as he thought about what his life would be like if he wasn't a werewolf. For one, he'd be able to have a family when he was older, which is what he wanted: he wanted to be a father one day, and a husband.

"Ah, so you've found the mirror, Mr. Lupin," a voice said from behind him. He turned to see Professor Dumbledore standing in the doorway to the classroom. "Now, I assume you've figured out what it does?" Dumbledore continued.

Remus nodded his head. "It shows your deepest desire," he said.

"That is correct." Dumbledore said, "but it is not wise to waste your time standing in front of it. So that is why I will warn you not to come here again."

Remus frowned but nodded, knowing how dangerous something like this could be. Dumbledore smiled, his eyes twinkling, "Now, I think it's about time that you head back to your common room."

Remus nodded "Yes, sir." He left the room, still wondering what it would be like if he was not a werewolf.
