It was all routine. And yet, he was nervous.
Their visit started like any other. He broke the door open with one kick, the four of them rushed inside, guns drawn, looking for their suspect. It was nothing out of the ordinary, but he still felt it, in his gut, that something was off. He and Gibbs stayed on the first floor, McGee headed for the backyard, and Ziva took the stairs up to the second floor. There was nothing, no sign of their suspect anywhere.
Until they all heard the gunshot.
It took all of 10 milliseconds for him to be bounding up the stairs, Gibbs and McGee following closely behind, guns still drawn. As he approached what appeared to be a master bedroom, he immediately noticed their suspect lying motionless on the floor right near the doorway. But as he moved closer he saw her.
She lay motionless as well, specks of blood visible on her yellow shirt. He rushed to her side, not caring about the other people in the room. He grabbed her hand and held it tight, her cold skin clashing against his warm skin.
"Ziva, can you hear me?"
Nothing.
"Ziva, come on. You're okay."
Still nothing. He felt as if his entire world was crumbling at his feet. He was afraid he had lost the one woman who had meant the world to him. He had lost the one person he trusted with his life. He had lost the love of his life.
"Tony," McGee's voice said from behind him.
Tony turned to look at him. "What, McGee?"
But he didn't answer. They were both caught off guard by Ziva's voice.
"Tony."
That was all it took to put a smile on his face. She struggled to sit up and Tony put his hand behind her head, helping her up to lean against the wall. "You're alright." As he was helping her, he saw a small cut on her forehead, which was where the blood seemed to have come from. McGee appeared suddenly with a band-aid, but left before he interrupted anything.
"DiNozzo."
Tony turned around at the sound of his boss's voice. "Yeah boss?"
Gibbs never looked at him. "Get David home. I don't want to see either of you until tomorrow."
He turned back around and helped Ziva to her feet slowly, and helped her out to the car. She didn't say anything to him on their way to the car and she honestly didn't have to. Because the only thing that mattered to him was that she was alive and well.
