It was never supposed to happen like this. Ginny and Luna were just friends, which was how it was meant to be. But the war had happened, and everything had spun out of control, and somehow they had ended up in each other's arms, seeking out the comfort they couldn't find elsewhere.

It had been nothing at first. Just two friends sitting and talking about everything and nothing, because that's what friends did. Yet, Ginny had found herself inexplicably drawn to Luna in a way that she had never felt about any of her previous boyfriends. Not even with Harry, the boy she'd been crushing on since before she even knew what a crush was.

The feeling refused to go away, and a part of Ginny hated herself for it. But another part of her was begging to explore this possibility, and that second part was much louder than the first. She'd had every intention of ignoring it anyway, but when Luna had dropped by the Burrow one July evening, Ginny had been unable to stop herself. They'd kissed as the sun dipped lower on the horizon, and it had been every bit as wonderful as Ginny had imagined.

"You have wrackspurts in your hair," Luna had commented as they had leaned into each other afterwards. Ginny had laughed and kissed Luna again, and it felt like nothing had changed at all.

That summer after the war was simultaneously the best and worst of Ginny's life. Everyone was still grieving, and home felt strange without Fred in it. But there was Luna. They spent as much time as they could together; sometimes they would talk for hours in the sun, or steal away and kiss in hidden corners. Sometimes they would just sit in silence, content.

Of course, it hadn't escaped the Weasleys' notice that something was going on, and they wouldn't be held off forever. George slid into a chair next to Ginny one morning - he looked so alone without Fred beside him - and grinned widely.

"Who's the mysterious stranger keeping you so occupied this summer?" he asked.

"Shut up," she told him. "And they're not a stranger." She made to leave, but George just kept talking.

"Oh really? Do tell me more about this other half then."

"Calling them my other half means that neither of us is whole," she snapped. "We are. Now shut up."

When she and Luna met later, Ginny just asked her outright.

"Luna, do you think I'm whole?" She winced as she said it, knowing how stupid it sounded.

"We've all lost things," Luna said plainly, and it was a better answer than Ginny had hoped for.

They parted at the end of that summer, both wanting to stay, but both also knowing that they couldn't. Ginny would miss Luna's funny little quirks, but most of all she would miss her wisdom. Luna had taught her so many things, most importantly that she wasn't whole. And maybe, just maybe, that was okay.
