"I challenge you to a battle of wits!" Kitsune cried, pointing triumphantly at her co-worker, Matsuda. He rolled his eyes, not even bothering to look up from the stack of files he was organizing.

"Did you not hear me just challenge you?" Kitty queried impatiently. "You're supposed to stand up and accept it, and then we battle until one of gets the cake in the freezer that L thinks I don't know about."

"It's all yours," Matsuda replied, waving a hand to express his apathy.

"Damn you, Touta, I'm bored! Do something to entertain me."

"I am choosing to ignore you."

"Did I ever tell you how much I hate you?"

When there was no response, Kitsune stood and huffed into her boss's office. She leaned against his computer desk, propped her chin in her hands and said in a loud singsong voice, "Whatcha doooooin?"

"Working."

"Why the hell is everyone around here so boring all the time?" She asked loudly, throwing her hands in the air and spinning around. "I mean, honestly, what's a girl got to do around here to keep from smashing her head in?"

"You could repair the copier," L quipped, catching her eye and smirking.

"Grand, L, that's just what I wanted you to say! How did you get to be so good with people?" she replied, her words dripping with sarcasm.

"That machine isn't going to fix itself. Now go," he said, dismissing her with a jerk of his head towards the clunky old copier. Kitty slunk towards the machine, mumbling under her breath all the while about stupid people who wear the same clothes everyday. After a while, she noticed that L had not given her any tools to work with. Skulking over to him, she whispered in his ear, "How am I supposed to fix this thing with no equipment?"

"You're a bright kid. You'll figure it out," he informed her cheerily. She blew a raspberry at him before turning on her heel and returning to her post at the copier. She loomed over it and scowled.

"Alright, I can do this…uh…"

She pressed the COPY button to no effect. Then she tried several other methods of repair, including pounding on the top very hard with her fist, which resulted in cracking the glass plate on which you placed the paper.

"Fix, you damn thing, fix!" she snarled, smacking at the sides with her open palm.

And suddenly…it growled.

"Gah!!" Kitty leapt back from the machine, cowering in fear. It made a sharp hissing sound, and the lid slammed up and down a few times. Quite sure she broke it even further, she took another step back.

"L…" she called in a fearful squeak.
"What, Kitsune?" he asked in a bored tone.

"The copier growled at me…I think it might explode…"

"I'm coming."

He heaved a huge sigh as he approached her and said, "What seems to be the issue here?"

"Go poke it. I'm afraid," she demanded in a high-pitched voice. He rolled his eyes, but went forward and lightly smacked the thing with both hands in the lid. Immediately, as if startled awake, the machine made a terrible screeching noise as the lid flew up. A tangle of wires was vomited from the inner depths of it, and got coiled tightly around L. He bent forward to untie a knot and promptly got his head stuck in the slamming lid.

"Help!" he called frantically.

Kitty could barely stand. She was laughing so hard that it hurt to breathe, but managed to retrieve her co-worker from the evil copy machine.

"We really need a new one of these damned things," he panted hatefully.

"Aw, you're so cute when you're mad!" she cooed, kissing him playfully. He frowned, but his eyes were laughing.

"From now on you're the only one allowed near that thing, okay?" he told her sternly.

"Whatever. I'm off to go engage Matsuda in a battle of wits or something. I'm bored." And with that, she trooped out of his office, leaving a badly bruised and fatigued L behind her.
