Summary: my take on Theoden's feelings when the Hornburg is breached in poem form. (baring in mind that poems don't have to rhyme)

Where is the horse and the rider?
Where is the knight that was lost?
They are gone into shadows and darkness,
Gone with the days of our valour.

What hope do we have against a foe so many?
What hope can we keep in our hearts?
How many men have fallen?
How many lives have ended?

The horse and the rider have gone,
Alone we stand in our halls,
The horn that was blowing is ended,
Forsaken are men of my kin.

The walls of our fortress are breached,
What hope that remained is lost,
Gone is the strength of my people,
Gone is the hope in my heart.

I have failed my people,
I have failed my son,
I have failed my forebears
The last of my house is gone.

And here on the fields of my people,
Beneath the plain and the plant,
Shall rest forever, Thengels son,
The last king of the Rohan.

Where is the horse and the rider?
Where is the horn that was blowing?
They are gone with the shadows,
The are gone with the past,

What hope the remained is lost,
What hope that we had is gone,
The horse and the rider are leaving,
The people Rohan are doomed.
