Inspired by Vivaldi's Summer from the Four Seasons
Most people considered summer as the best of the four seasons, their favourite, the most joyful season which was full of fun, wonderful days and memories, of romances and freedom, afternoons by the water, ice cream and laughter.
For Severus Snape, it was the most annoying season, the one he liked least.
Of course it had not always been like that, as a child, he had loved the summer just as much as everyone else. He had been able to leave the house for the whole day, strolling around in the nearby meadows and it had also been summer when he had met Lily.
They would run around, play child fantasy games, or just lie together under 'their' tree and watch the birds fly on the warm summer breeze.
When he had started to go to Hogwarts, the summers became bitter sweet, as he would still spend a lot of time with Lily, learning for school together, but coming home also meant that he would be exposed to the abuses of his father again and everything had only gotten worse after his first year of school – the insults, the beating. To his father, he was a disgrace, an abnormal child born by his useless wife.
After he had become the potions professor at Hogwarts, he would spend the first summers in the loneliness of the castle, having way too much time to think about the past with the students, his source of activity, gone for a month. He would think about what he had done, about missing Lily so much that it did hurt just as much as the guilt inside of him and sometimes, when he heard laughter from the grounds and imagined it to be Lily's, he could not help but give in to the feelings that were captured inside of his soul. They would break free and for once, Severus Snape would cry, mourning over the love he had lost because of his own stupidity while the world would go on turning, while the people outside his cold and dark dungeons would enjoy the sunshine.
Some people, namely Albus Dumbledore, Minerva McGonagall and also Rolanda Hooch, would sometimes try to convince him to spend some time with them, that it was not good for him to lurk around in the shadows, becoming consumed by his darkest thoughts while the world rejoiced, but he simply ignored their knocks, their concerned questions.
Spending his summer in his childhood home at Spinners End after his parents death perhaps was another way to torture himself for what he had done wrong.
This was the place where everything had started, where his father had started beating his wife, then also his two year old son, this was the place Severus had discovered his magical abilities, where he had started to hate his father, all muggles for calling him a freak, here his wrong path had already started to form.
Here, under the green trees, in summer, he had met his true love, Lily.
