Mother,
I do hope you will forgive me for sending this to you so late in the evening, but I wanted you to be the first to know. I ask that you keep this information between you and I for now. I fear that father would not be too thrilled with me should he get ahold of this letter.
Do you remember when I came home for winter holidays my 2nd year and told you that I had met the girl I was going to marry? Daphne Greengrass, if I'm not mistaken. You asked me what made her so special. I admit, I thought you foolish for not seeing the obvious. She was in Slytherin, Pure-Blood, and quite possibly the prettiest girl I'd ever seen! What more could you possibly want for your heir?
Do you remember your response, Mother? You laughed and ruffled my hair, and then you said, "That's lovely, dear. But all of that aside, what makes her special to you? Does her intelligence match yours? Does she give you something to smile about? Does she make you want to be a better person? Despite what your father believes, Merlin help me should he hear this, but there is much more to a person than the purity of their blood. Do not mistake obligation for love, my son."
At that time, I could not comprehend what you meant. For many years I'd been consumed by father's beliefs, so I could not see what was more important than keeping the lineage pure. We could date back our family tree for generations, why ruin that for something as preposterous as love?
It took me a long time, but I think I finally understand now. I've been seeing someone, Mother. She can be stubborn and naive. Her bravery is infuriating, as is her selflesness. We argue like mad, over the simpliest of things. Her intellect rivals mine, and though I loathe to admit it, may surpass it. Whenever I so much as think of her, I grin like a fool. She makes me laugh and gives me hope. She sees the good in me and I want to be the man she deserves.
I think I love her. Even after the years of cruel remarks and taunts, I believe she loves me too.
Her name is Hermione Granger. She is a Gryffindor, Muggle-born, and the most beautiful woman I have ever seen. And once we graduate, I'm going to ask her to marry me.
I can only hope that you remember that conversation so many years ago, it is the one thing that gave me the courage to write to you this evening. I'd like for you to meet her and to be apart of our lives.
Love, Draco
