The Thieves

My name isn't so important. Well it is but I'm not allowed to tell humans. Actually I'm not allowed to even let humans know I exist, but if I'm going to be a great detective one day I'll have to make myself known. So for now: Call me L.

I, L, am very, very tiny. On top of that I slouch so I'm even smaller. I am what some might call a borrower. My group and I like to take things we need to survive. We take things humans wouldn't notice are gone like tissues, buttons, string, and most of all: Sugar. Yes, Sugar, sweet sweet huge cubes of sugar.

I live in the floors of the Yagami residence. Not a thing happens in this house without me knowing. Lately the oldest son of this household, Light, has been acting very strangely. He talks to himself and locks up in his room. Come to think of it when I was his age I guess I was like that too. Oh the teenage years.

Today another borrower made herself known in the garden. So I asked my neighbor, Watari, to bring her in. The great detective will solve the mystery of this mysterious new person! She sat on my pincushion chair in a gothic Lolita style. Though it is very popular among young girls, she has by far been the only one I've seen pull it off. He blond hair was pulled up on both sides of her head and she was very pretty. She called herself Misa Misa. Like me she dreamed of becoming something more than a borrower. I wanted to be a detective and he wanted to be an idol.

"So Misa, are your socks black too?"

"What does that have to do with anything?"

"Nothing really. Can I get you some tea?"

"Sure," she looked over, "I see you borrowed a strawberry?"

"No no, if I borrowed it I would intend to give it back. It is stolen."

"Then everything in here is stolen."

"My my, Misa, you are very sharp indeed."

I poured her a cup and eyed my precious strawberry. I don't care how beautiful she is, she is not getting a lick of my precious red jewel.

"So won't you tell me about why you were in the garden today?"

"Well, I used to live with a friend back in some girl's house and one day she brought a boyfriend home. He was just so handsome I couldn't help myself! So I followed him here until a local cat attacked me! Then your Watari friend showed up and saved me!"

"I see."

"I had no idea there would be other borrowers living in this house. Shame."

"if you'd like you can stay with me? I have an extra room?"

"Really!?"

"Sure sure, and you can watch Light with me when you're bored."

"That sounds great!"

"But you have to swear in blood that you won't go near that strawberry."

"… Okay? I swear?"

"Welcome to the Yagami Household."

I concluded this day with a big sugar cube and I tried to stuff the whole thing in my mouth.
