Countdown
10 seconds.
The Guardians stood at a crossroad, exchanging the last comments for the day before they parted. The King found his gaze wandering to where the Joker was, speaking rather animatedly with the Ace.
9 seconds.
The Queen glanced anxiously at the wristwatch she was wearing, and stated that she really had to leave, or her parents would be worried again. The Joker smiled and waved off the doll-like Queen cheerfully, and the King felt his mood lift slightly at the sight of her smile.
8 seconds.
Having spotted the former Jack at the opposite street while waving the Queen goodbye, the Ace bounded excitedly across the road, declaring that she must get an ice-cream treat from him no matter what. This left the Joker and the current Jack laughing as the two disappeared round the corner. Just a bit more, the King told himself.
7, 6, 5 seconds.
He had noticed the little spark in the King's eyes, and the intelligent and considerate Jack understood that he needed to make himself scarce. Pointing towards the slowly darkening street that the Queen had taken to, he quickly announced his decision to walk the lady home before hurrying after her. The King thought he heard the Jack whisper something that sounded like "good luck" as he ran past.
4 seconds.
The King stood alone with the Joker at the crossroads now. The silence between them was deafening as they watched the Jack vanish into the dark stretch of road after the Queen.
3 seconds.
The Joker had broken the silence, saying that she would be fine walking home alone today. The King consented; perhaps she wanted some time to herself, he reasoned, it would be rude to invade into her personal time.
2 seconds.
He bade her farewell, and as she turned to walk away, the King took this long-awaited opportunity to utter three words, three words that he said to her everyday, and yet never failed to startle her.
1 second.
The King did not expect the Joker to reply at all due to her embarrassment, and so, when she turned to smile at him, blushing a brilliant red nonetheless, he felt his spirits soar.
Time up.
The King waited till the Joker had completely disappeared into the horizon before he made his way down the bricked path that led to his home slowly.
The day ended well again today.
