This is my take on the moment after Clare finds out she is pregnant. Enjoy. :)
The world slowed down. It must have, because Clare was feeling like she was living at high speed. Her eyes darted back and forth from her phone to the ground and her hands were shaking at a pace that would put a hummingbird to shame. But her breaths were slow. Despite how full they were, she still felt like she was drowning. No amount of oxygen was going to be enough to calm her down.
Suddenly Clare was pulled out of the stupor when Alli tapped her shoulder. She spun around, wide-eyed, and bit her lip. Alli raised an eyebrow and narrowed her eyes.
"Are you okay? Who was that on the phone?"
Clare glanced at Drew. He was laughing and he had his arms around Becky's waist.
"It...uh, just New York stuff. I'm just...um...I'm really excited and uh...I need to go."
Alli scrunched up her face, studied Clare for a moment, and then nodded.
"Well, call me later. My family is Skyping with Sav at dinner tonight, but I'll be free after eight."
Clare nodded back at Alli and took steps forward. She found herself moving her feet towards Drew and her mind was inexplicably blank. She ended up about a metre in front of Drew and his smile waned slightly when he saw her expression.
"Hey Clare."
Clare pursed her lips and inhaled sharply.
"I need...you."
Her eyes widened again. She meant to say she needed to talk to him, but all the words didn't come out and she was too shocked to repeat herself.
Becky's expression softened from her previous look of confusion. She smiled at Drew and rubbed his shoulder.
"I'll see you later, Drew. Bye Clare."
Becky promptly left and once Drew waved goodbye to her, he turned to face Clare. His bewilderment was quite apparent in his face.
"Clare...what's going on?"
Clare felt the sudden urge to touch Drew. Any contact. But she found herself frozen to her spot. She looked down at her feet and then stared Drew in the eye.
"We...um...we really need to talk."
Drew's face dropped and it looked like the world had stopped for him as well.
