Smiles. Smiles surrounded Lincoln as he walked down the halls. He kept his head down, hoping no one came up to him to talk to him. They often asked him "What's your power" only for their smiles to turn into twisted faces of disgust when he told them he didn't have one. For now, he just wanted to get to class. In this world, it's kill or be killed. Sometimes metaphorically, sometimes literally. The people with the best powers, are at the top. A monarchy of sorts. And well, in this highschool, he was at the bottom. For anyone, with any sort of power to pick on. Which happened frequently. He's lucky Leni has top of the line healing, and that she was a bit of an airhead so she did not ask questions. He was surprised she hadn't spilled anything to anyone by accident.
The walls were crowded, making moving fairly slow. Until...
Boom!
The halls split in two, as a door from one of the classrooms burst open, displaying a lightshow of two colors. Orange and people stood, breathing heavily. One was bleeding from his arm, the other on her lip. The girls hair was green, while the boys was orange. The orange kids blue shirt was lined with dust and blood, and bruises marked his face all over. The girl had burns throughout their body, with her eyes glowing slightly. They looked to be freshman, younger than the others around him. Older than him though, he had gotten lucky with entrance exams with his secret tactic of "Guess if you don't know the answer" and got an advanced placement. Sophomore.
The girl charged as her foot began to glow
"Such a flawed design" He heard a voice say. He looked down, to find his younger sister Lisa standing beside him
"Evolution gave us these incredible abilities but it can't seem to figure out how to put out that annoying light that disables any tactics we may use against our enemies. Quite a pest, but my research will continue on how to cease it one day."
The girl slung her leg out, and Lincoln watched as it turned into stone. The boy raised his arm, and Lincoln winced as it snapped in half. The boy cried out, and let his arm fall. He looked up at the girl, with tears in his eyes, before opening his mouth
"Felicity you asshole! All you had to do was apologize"
The boy threw a punch, and as it landed, sent the girl flying with her shirt catching fire. She stood up quickly, and while putting it out, groaned
"Why would I apologize when your friend poured water on my head! On purpose!"
She went in again, but before she could, they both gasped, and fell to the floor. Their powers deactivated, and the noises they made sounded like they couldnt breath. He looked over at his sister. Lisa's hand was out, her face blank. Brown light emitted from her hands.
She spoke lightly
"I can control the gravitational forces in many places at once, weighing down whichever individual is enough of an imbecile to attempt to make a mockery of this school. So please, cease whatever activity you are engaging in and attempt to just, be better"
Her hand dropped, and the students began gasping for air. Breathing heavily, they stood up and went to the nurse. Lincoln looked at his little sister, who met his gaze
"What? Im one of the top rankers here. I have to maintain the balance."
Ranks. He forgot about that somehow. Out of the 10 thousand students on campus, only one can be on the top. His sister Lisa was in 97th place. Everyone knew his younger sister. The 7 year old prodigy who used science to advance her natural ability. She was dangerous, to everyone. No one wanted to get on her bad side. And of course, he was at the very bottom. One lost fight and hes kicked out of the school.
She walked away, leaving Lincoln staring at what had happened. The way they fought played in his mind like a record, he watched the way they both moved in on one another. He stashed it away deep into his memory, and walked away to his class. The girl swirled around in his mind as he walked. The way she fought mimicked some of the fighters he's seen on TV. The ones in the himalayas.. Her green hair was rare in the world, but not as rare as white. Lincoln was the only white haired person they believe to exist. Something special, incredible even! But no, he didn't have a power. Instead, he had to leech off of others and fight with smarts and if he can't win, run.
He made it to his classroom in a few minutes, room 203. Just enough time for the bell to ring as he stepped inside. Others in the hall scrambled inside, while Lincoln quickly scouted for a seat. In the back right corner of the room, was a singular seat. Away from most light, and out of sight from most people. He scurried over to it, and quickly sat in it.
He noticed everyone else pushing through. Red heads, Purple, blue, black, brown. The seat to his right scooched open and Lincoln turned. No one was there, only a backpack on the ground. The chair scooted itself in, and the nothingness in front of him slowly turned into a girl. She had a lollipop in her mouth. Her hair was in three different colors, so was her general color scheme. Black nails and boots, purple shirt and eyes, and cyan shorts and a singular cyan tattoo running up her black skin. It was a vine, with different images of flowers and butterflies going through it. She looked stunning to the boy, who looked away once she realized he was staring.
"Hello" She said. She had a slight accent.
Lincoln looked at her, and froze. He didn't know what to say at all.
"Do you speak English?" She said, before switching languages
"Est-ce que tu parles français?"
"So she's from France" He thought
"No, sorry. I kinda spaced off for a moment" He laughed a bit, and watched as she laughed a bit too. It was hearty, like it had been a while since she'd done it.
"My names Adalene. Yours?"
"Lincoln" He said, sticking his hand out. She took it. Her hand was soft. Letting go, she reached into her backpack and pulled out a stick of gum, and brought it to him
"You want one?" She said
"No thanks!" He said smiling.
The girl frowned, and put the stick on her desk. Her face reeked of embarrassment, which Lincoln caught onto
"Woah, what's wrong?"
"My mother said that gum would help make friends when in a new school. I guess it didn't work"
Lincoln looked at her, before snatching the gum and unwrapping it. He shoved it into his mouth quickly, and chewed. Cinnamon filled his mouth as the spice tingled in his nose
Adalene smiled, and nodded
"Thank you. So, what's your power? I have never seen white hair before. I myself am currently rank 20 here. I can turn invisible as you saw. Strength. Also-"
She brought up her hand, palm up. He watched as a rose sprouted from the it.
"Illusion. It is what has gotten me this far."
She crushed her palm and the illusion faded way in colored smoke. He smiled, before his heart tightened when he realized what she had asked
"I don't have a power"
She looked at him, and instead to his surprise, instead of turning away in disgust or moving away, she just smiled
"Well, that is too bad! It would have been fun to spar with someone!"
Lincoln smiled, before turning back to the board. After class, he walked with her. Talked. About their lives, his many siblings, her being an only child, etc. And as he waved her goodbye, and parted aways to go to his next class, she opened her phone and dialed a number.
A boy answered.
"Hello?"
"You cannot believe what just happened Dan. I met a powerless, it was awful"
She giggled into the phone, as Dan did as well
"He had the audacity to talk to me like a friend. He even walked next to me after class. Hey, I have an idea. How about, we go and see him during lunch?"
She continued talking until the bell rang. The sharp sound echoed in her ears as she quickly put down her phone and sped off to her own class
The next class went smoothly for the boy. No "Lets go around tell everyone a little about ourselves" or any of that shiz. The words "The man with the plan" played in his head. Maybe this year won't be as bad as the last. As the bell rang again, and students were released from their classes, Lincoln stayed behind. Getting there too quick would make him stick out, so would getting there too late. He just had to wait for the perfect spot in the crowd. He saw his chance in the small gap between two other students, and immediately took the spot. He felt some eyes on him, more specifically his hair, but brushed it off. He was used to it at this point.
The students moved much more fluidly at this point. Every once in a while, he'd spot old bullies from his past. Many of them had moved on from picking on the kid with no powers, but that didn't stop the small few who still did. If it hadn't been for Leni, he would have died long ago. One of them in the crowd was called "Brute", and for good reason. He was huge, around 6'6. His enhanced strength won him a lot of battles, but his lack of intellect did the opposite. So, he sat in mid tier. His brown hair covered one of his eyes, and as he walked, the black shirt exposed the intersections of his belly that poked out from his tight jeans.
Brute took a sharp left, going towards the office. Lincoln guessed he had gotten in trouble already. But as he turned right and walked in, Brute had a worried expression on his face. Something that Lincoln had never seen before.
As Brute disappeared behind the door, Lincoln hurried along into the cafe. The long lines twisting and turning through the incredible large room gave little way for walking. Lincoln took small steps, trying to slither by everyone as quick as possible. Pushing through the crowds and over the small scraps of food left by everyone who was lucky enough to get it first, Lincoln made it to the other side, where he needed to be. The doors to the outside were here, where he could easily just walk out and enjoy the 50 minutes of air he was given before heading back into hell
He sighed, and pressed open the door
"No ones out here! Then again, most people stay inside to talk to their friends" he thought. Lincoln sighed as he looked out at the scene. The grass looked beautiful, rolling up and down the small hills and bumps that covered his vision. The forestry and the small puddles of water he saw only complimented that. Lincoln smiled, he missed this
"Boop!" A voice said, poking Lincoln in the back
Lincoln turned back quickly, his smile replaced with a frown and his heart beating fast. It was the french girl, Adalene. She smiled at him, and Lincoln smiled back. "Oh, hey!" He said "You scared me"
She giggled "What are you doing out here?"
Lincoln nodded his head towards the woods and grass
"Enjoying the view. What about you?"
"Oh, I am about to enjoy something else"
Lincoln turned his head "Eh?"
Something swiped under his legs, and Lincoln fell. He slammed his head onto the wet brick blow his feet, and slowly sat back up. His vision was blurry, but as he came to, Adalene was standing next to another boy. He was taller, about 5'11. His hair was yellow, but blonde, yellow. His aviation goggles constricted it back as his leather jacket covered up a red t shirt with the flash symbol on it.
"What the hell?' Lincoln said, standing up. His head was spinning. Adalene smiled at him again
"You had the wrong idea in class. I am not your friend Lincoln. You are a powerless. Why would I ever want to be friends with you?"
She spat the last words with venom, and in seconds, the face that Lincoln saw as cute and sweet, turned sour. He felt heart start beating. He felt, mad. Incredibly mad. "I fell for it again"
The yellow haired boy darted towards Lincoln faster than he could react. "Speed" Lincoln thought. That was the boys power. A punch connected with Lincoln's face, and sent him flying over the guardrails Lincoln was looking over no less than 5 minutes ago.
"I let this happen. Again. Its my fault"
The two teens appeared below him before he hit the ground. Adele's eyes began to glow was purple light shined from her right fist. She brought it onto the boy mid air, slinging him farther away. Lincoln laid in the grass, bleeding from his nose and lips. A large dark bruise was forming on his stomach as the his body was beginning to register the pain. He didn't care though, he was pissed. And he wasn't going to let some two faced bitch and her boy toy kick him out of this he worked so hard to get into.
He stood, and saw the surprise on their faces. Adalene smiled "Oh, you're still awake? Well…"
She lifted her hand up elegantly, flowing like silk. She clenched her fist, and a ring of fire surrounded the boy. He jumped back, and kept trying to back away from the large fire slowly building towards him
"Pyromania?"
As he stared at the flames, the boy beside Ada yelled
"All you have to do is come with us and tell the principle you lost a legitimate one on one fight with Adalene and you won't get burned"
"Burned? Burned!"
He looked around at everything. The fire isn't burning the grass and there was no smoke being released. It was an illusion.
"What, do you think i'm stupid? Do you think I cant notice basic shit that happens when fire is around? You may be rank 20, but you need to work on your allusions. Fire burns the grass dumbass!"
Lincoln screamed these words. His heart was pounding out of his chest, he wanted to punch something. Out of nowhere, he felt a large weight on his shoulders be lifted. Like his mind had just been cleared. He felt like he was on autopilot
His memories began racing back towards him. First, of Leni. Her insane healing entered his mind, and a small portion of Lincoln's hair turned blonde, just like hers. His wounds began to heal themselves, the protein in the muscles stitching back to one another. He looked at the illusions, and somehow knew just what to do. He blinked, and they were gone. Adalene looked shocked
He looked at her directly, and into her eyes. Confusion.
The boy beside her moved faster than before, causing a sonic boom in the area he was standing. He appeared behind Lincoln in an instant, but Lincoln copied his speed, and punched straight into his stomach with Adalenes strength. All of these colors incarnated themselves in Lincoln's hair, replacing the white that once shined bright.
"Dan!" Adalene yelled.
Dan looked back at the girl
"I thought you said he didn't have a power!" He yelled
Lincoln clenched his jaw as brown appeared on his scalp. Lisa's power
He punched his hand directly onto the ground, and Dan went down with a scream. Both of his legs snapped under the strength of the gravity being exerted
"How do I know how to do any of this?" He thought, looking at the Dan, who was staring at his exposed bone.
Lincoln turned back to Adalene, who was beginning to run away. He sped up to her, and kicked her legs under, just like she made Dan do.
She looked up to the boy, her hair messy all over her dark face.
"I'm sorry!" She said, trying to back away from the boy.
Lincoln looked back at Dan
"Do you know what's the quickest way to get rid of someone using speed? Break his legs. Now, what about strength, and Illusion?
Her eyes widened as Lincoln brought up his fist. She turned invisible, and rolled out of the way onto the grass beside him.
Lincoln looked around for her, but to no avail. He lost her. He walked back over to Dan, who was sobbing quietly on the ground
The hair on Lincoln's head turned white again as Lincoln dragged the boy through the cafe, people staring at the white haired boy who took out rank number 11. As the Janitors cleaned up the blood through the halls and the nurse tended to Dans wounds, Lincoln walked back to class, this time with all eyes on him.
