notes; when i first saw this episode, i kind of knew who river was and i felt so bad for her. she loved the doctor and he knew absolutely nothing about her. she was just a woman from his future and he was meeting her for the first time. i couldn't imagine the heartbreak she was feeling. please enjoy!
no escape from reality
[silence in the library]
"Doctor," she starts, her voice pleading, "please tell me you know who I am."
His reply shatters her.
Of course, River Song always knew that this day would come when the Doctor wouldn't know who she was. Every time she saw him came the fear of him being the man who knew nothing about her. She would always look into his eyes and he would stare into her with a fire that she only saw in him. These eyes—eyes that were amber brown and not his usual light blue ones—are ones that had never seen her before. They had never experienced the places and adventures that those two had together and that was the thing that tears her heart into pieces.
She thinks of the all the times she has been with him. Memories flood into her mind. There are flashes of her parents (who the Doctor hadn't met yet either), times where things have scared her and he would make it better again, kisses, and dates that made her fall in love with him all over again. Suddenly she remembers their date before she came to the Library and how he cried when he gave her the screwdriver. She didn't understand why at the time and now she did.
Her hand reaches out to straighten his bow tie, but then she sees that there is no bow tie to straighten. Her heart breaks even more as she wishes to hear him say his classic, "bow ties are cool." Her insides ache from the thought of him not knowing who she was to him and she feels like bursting into tears, but she manages to hold herself together.
This isn't my Doctor, she thinks to herself, not yet.
And she wants nothing more than to use her vortex manipulator to run back into the arms of her Doctor.
