Broken Mirror

Laying down in the dark is one of Len's favorite things to do whenever he wanted to clear his mind of whatever was bothering him at the time. At the corner of his room where he took solace, was a desk and next to the desk was a mirror that when sitting in front of the mirror with the moonlight shines down it reminds him of a painting he saw when he was a child. He smiled as he closed his eyes thinking in peace as the moon light began to slowly fade away into morning.

Len woke up to faded sounds of beeping as he began to take in his surroundings, he was shocked at first to realize he was in the hospital but then quickly remembered. He looked over to his sister who was in a coma, he quickly turned his head away to look outside the window from the site of her being hooked to all those machines. He drew out a long sigh as he got up to stretch his legs, "Looks like it's gonna be another sunny day" he said smiling "just wished you were awake to see it." He turned to the door "I'll be back, just getting something to eat." On his long walk toward the cafeteria he passed by nurses and doctors, people who were either celebrating life or saying goodbye to a loved one he even seen a people who were in the same position as his sister.

After getting a cup of coffee and a blueberry muffin Len sat down at an empty table then started looking around the cafeteria watching people eat, laugh, cry or just be deep in thought while scrolling on their phones. Len blinked and quickly patted his pockets for his phone "Fuck" he muttered "must have left it in the room." He shrugged it off "oh well" he sighed not really caring at this point he took another look outside to see the autumn sun shining, the birds flying as the leaves gently began to fall. He took a sip of his coffee and a bite of his muffin as he watched people pass not really paying attention he began to think back to when Rin was awake.

~A Year Earlier~

It was just a few days after winter finals, both he and Rin were sitting on the rooftop at school enjoying the lunch break. Rin was singing and dancing as he was writing down the lyrics to their new song called Adolescence for their upcoming holiday concert. Suddenly he felt a pair of arms wrap around his neck "Whatcha doin'?" Len without looking said in a monotone voice "what does it look like to you Rin, I'm writing. Continue to sing please." Rin sighed as she crossed her arms "what got you so uptight? finals are finally over relax!" Len looked up "Listen we need to be professional about this, I don't want to ruin this opportunity, because you want to slack off." Rin got up to look down at her classmates were eating their lunches, without warning she began to shout into her brother's ear "Can you believe it brother?!" she laughed as Len jumped covering his ear annoyed. "what the hell Rin what am I to believe?" she took his pen making him frown even more as she made poking gestures at his face "Silly, we just signed a deal with Vocaloid; do you know how many people would KILL to be us?" Rin up both arms up in the air so Len couldn't get the pen making him struggle "How are you not excited about this?" Len was finally able to get the pen away from her then gave her a serious look "I am happy about it more than you know, but I would like to work on this song now that we have more free time. So, can you please continue to sing lunch break is almost over." Rin let out a loud sigh while looking up after the afternoon sky "whatever" she mumbled under her breath.

After a lengthy period of silence Len looked over to see Rin as she just stood there staring at the buildings "Rin, are you ok?" he was about to throw a pen at her forehead when she began to talk making him stop in his tracks "Len what would you do if I suddenly died?" she turned to look at him with a grim expression on her face which sent a shiver down his spine "Rin I know you don't want to work right now but there's no need to be this dramatic." Rin finally sat down next to him "come on, tell me what would you do if your lovely sister ceased to exist." Len clenched his teeth trying his hardest not to yell "Listen I really thin—" he was interrupted with Rin looking just as serious as him "Just answer the question, I really want to know what you would do." He shook his head then stared at her, everything from her head to her toes except for some parts; resembles him, that's what makes them twins after all. when he looked at Rin it was like looking at a mirror but only when he walked away she was right by his side to help him through the good times and the bad. To wake up one day and not see her made him feel awful like a never-ending nightmare that would be worse than hell. How in the world would he go on without her? but twins lose each other all the time by having sperate lives or by death, how come he never really put this much thought about this before? But why now though? He questioned himself quietly as thoughts circled around in his head. It wasn't until he heard his name ring loudly in his ear that he even notices a tear fall from his left eye. "w-what were we talking about?" he stuttered blinking away any tears that dared to fall. Rin saw the pain in eyes "I didn't think this question would send you into such a panic I thought you would come up with your usual pain in the ass remarks." He pulled her into a tight hug "are you serious? you're my sister for god sake, how could I even joke about that, losing you would be devastating." Rin felt him shake, a sad smile came across her lips as she patted his back "big baby, of course it would be. But that doesn't mean you won't pull through." He let go of her and was about to object but he saw her trying her best not to cry as well. "You have to move on, Kaito, Miku and the others would be here for you. If something happened to you I wouldn't know what I would do either, but I know I'd be able to hold on not just for me but for them as well." Rin hugged him once more "now come on big baby" she said getting up as the school bell began to ring "enough with the sappiness breaks over." Len blinked in confusion "How do you switch emotions so quickly? one minute your crying next your all giggly." Rin laughed yelling from the door "come on cry baby, let's go!" sighing at the emotional roller-coaster his sister just put him through "coming." he sighed. Walking over to her shaking his head. What he failed to notice was the bloody handkerchief she quickly hid in the of her back pocket.

~End of flash back~

Len started blankly at his half drunken coffee and half eaten muffin I always knew something was off that day. He thought as he got up from the table. I just wondered why it took so long for me to notice, we're twins, how come I didn't notice the pain and suffering you were in? Len sighed as he made his way from the cafeteria to Rin's room door. As he opened the door he saw Miku standing right in front of him as well as Kaito, Gumi, Meiko along with Luka and Kamui staring at him. "where were you?" Miku asked holding up her phone "I tried calling you, but you didn't answer." Len shrugged as he walked in "I left my phone, but I thought it was here." Kaito chimed in "No we've been here the entire time that Miku has been trying to reach you." Len looked around for his bag to see everything he needed but his cell phone "FUCK, I can't believe I been so stupid!" he then began to slap his forehead with the palm of his hand causing everyone to stare and for Gumi rushed to Len side "Hey, calm down maybe you left it at home?" Len looked over to Rin then looked down. Luka placed a hair behind her ear "Maybe you left it because you were in such a hurry?" "That's the best conclusion, maybe it dropped outside the hospital?" Kamui said as he shrugged his shoulders. Meiko rolled her eyes "then wouldn't have someone picked it up and hand it over to the front desk?" Miku tried her best not to laugh "clever idea but If it were outside wouldn't we have picked it up the minute we saw it? I mean his phone isn't that hard to miss." Kamui sighed in defeat "yeah… good point" this made Gumi and the others start to laugh. Len smiled a bit then went back into a frown after looking at Rin. You should be enjoying moments like this. He thought, Len turned his head to see Luka poking fun at Kamui for a silly idea he came up with for that morning. I know Laughter is the best medicine, but I don't feel like laughing knowing you don't have much time left. everyone stopped laughing to look at Len's face, he was tired and from the looks of it he didn't get much to eat. Kaito put hand on his back "Hey why don't we go get your phone? You need the fresh air it would do you some good since you been cooped up in this room for so long."" Meiko spoke up "Great idea, take this time on just getting your mind off things, we'll call if anything happens."

Kaito lead Len out of the room leaving Gumi and the others to watch over Rin. Gumi shook her head "this shouldn't be happening to such a young girl, she has her whole life ahead of her." she rubbed her hand over on Rin's hand entangling their fingers together "gosh it's gotten smaller than I remembered." Tears began to fall from her eyes "This is so unfair, she should be getting ready to finish high school, she should be on tour, she should be out enjoying life but instead…" Gumi's voice trailed off as she looked over to everyone "it's not fair but that's how life is." Meiko said looking down at her feet "Life can be cruel sometimes." Miku looked over at the calendar "only one day left, imagine how he must feel the only family he has left gone." Luka shook her head "We're his family now, when Rin leaves we will be here for him." Her voice cracked as she continued "we just got to be strong for him." Kamui handed her a tissue "let's talk about the good times yeah? For Rin's sake." Gumi tried her best to put on a smile "ok then, whose up for some cards?"

Back at Len and Rin's apartment, Len was throwing everything around to find his phone making Kaito duck and dodge whatever came his way. "H-hey can you got easy man? I'm almost—" before he could finish his sentence Kaito was structed by an encyclopedia. Kaito let out a loud scream making Len rush over to him "sorry Kaito I didn't mean it, are you ok?" Kaito rubbed his head. "gimme some ice and let's take a breather before you make more of a mess." After handing Kaito an ice packet from the kitchen he motioned him for him to sit down, while putting the ice pack on his head Kaito let out a gentle sigh hopefully I can get the kid to talk Kaito turned to him "Alright Len, you have been bundling your emotions up for months you have to let it go before it destroys you." Len got up "Listen I have no time for chit chat I need to hurry and find my phone, so we can go back to the hospital." Kaito hung his head Great job Kaito just had to make the kid go into panic mode. Kaito stood up "Len you have to calm down alright, you are making everyone worried sick including me." Kaito continued before Len had a chance to say anything "and don't give me that, you're "doing fine" nonsense." Len looked down "Tell me Len when was the last time you ate?" Len looked up cocking his head to the left "today, I had a blueberry muffin." Kaito crossed his arms "that's not good enough, we aren't leaving until we put some food in your system and cleared your mind." Len curled his fist in anger "Kaito I got no time to be fooling around I need to be near side, why won't you get that?!" Kaito stared at him "because for the last three weeks you haven't been to school, you been missing important deadlines and you haven't paid your bills. If it wasn't for Miku you wouldn't even have the lights on or food in the house" Kaito rushed over to the refrigerator pulling it wide open for Len to see it stock full of his favorite food and drink. "you haven't been taking care of yourself, you think you have but as soon as Rin came out of surgery and fell into a coma you've been on air pilot" Len bit his lip "whatever, I had to be near her ok." Kaito slammed the door then walked over to Len "Stop acting like a spoiled child and get this through your thick head, you need to talk to us, let us know how you feel. We are all in pain it's not just you who is going to miss her when she dies!" Len eyes widen in shock as he punched Kaito in the face "don't you dear say that!" Len hissed as he looked down at Kaito "Ok kid, that's it I know I might have been going overboard" Kaito then got up to punch Len back in the face "but hitting me isn't the answer" Len tackled Kaito on the floor punching him in the face "OVERBOARD, I'll show you overboard?!" Len yelled as he was about to punch him again but Kaito grabbed his arms then headbutted him making Len fall backwards "All I wanted to do was talk" he said getting up breathing heavily "but if you want to fight instead, you got one" Len got up getting ready to punch Kaito but was met with a pair of arms tightening around his body. No matter how much he struggled to get free or how many times he yelled and cussed for Kaito to let go of him, Kaito just stood there hugging him tighter until all the emotions he kept locked up began to pour out in heavy sobs. Kaito stood there smiling That's it kid, that's all I wanted you to do he thought as Len arms wrapped around him you just needed to let your emotions out. After two hours of Len crying, he finally found his phone under his bedroom dresser.

When Len and Kaito got back to the hospital Luka gasped in shock "What the hell happened to you two?" Len smiled rubbing his cheek "um…uh well you see" he trailed off as Kaito waved his hand pulling him into a side hug "it's nothing Lulu just some male bonding, you wouldn't understand." he said chuckling. Luka looked over to Kamui "Male bonding?" Kamui jumped up "uh…why are you asking me, I wasn't there" Meiko chuckled inwardly something tells me he went a little too far trying to get him to talk. I swear I love that idiot. A knock on the room door made everyone turn their attention to the door as a tall guy with sliver hair and a small lady with brown came in to check on Rin. "what in god's name happened to your faces?" the nurse pointed out as she saw both Len and Kaito's bruised faces "Male bounding" Gumi snickered as the nurse rushed out to gather her first aid kit. The doctor cleared his throat after checking on Rin's vital sign's he turned to Len "Well as you know miss Kagamine has been in a coma for sometime now, we have tried everything and it is up to you as her next of kin to let us know what we should do next, we could keep her to see if maybe she would wake up but I don't think that would be a good idea seeing as it's been a year I personally don't think we should prolong the inevitable." Len tried his best not to cry as he bit his lip "C-can I think about it for a few more minutes?" he asked looking up at the nurse who came in with bandages and gauges. The doctor nodded "Well just let me know as soon as possible." The doctor put his hand on Len's shoulder "I know this has to be the toughest decision of your life, but I know you'll make it through." Len nodded and smiled "Thanks doc" the doctor turned to walk out with the nurse following behind "No More Rough Housing You Two." Said the nurse as she gives them both a deadly glare as she leaves the room making him and Kaito nod their heads uncontrollably. "Man, that was scary" whispered Kaito, Len just nodded his head in agreement followed by laughing which made everyone laugh with him. When the laughter died down Len got up "I'm going go on the roof to clear my head, I'll be back; ring me if anything." When Len left Meiko sat down next to Kaito "So you let your anger get the best of you huh?" Kaito blushed sheepishly "yeaah but I had to" he said putting his hands up in defense "If I didn't I don't think he would be laughing like he did." Meiko nodded her head in agreement then kisses his cheek "You did an excellent job" This made Kaito blush as she laid her head on his shoulders "Get a room you two" said Kamui as he rolled his eyes "Oh is someone jealous?" Miku said playfully "I-I'm not jealous!" Kamui stammered as Miku started to poke him "sure you're not" said both Gumi and Luka as they chimed in poking his cheeks.

Len sat on the stool watching the sunset he looked down to see his shadow then to the empty space near him. He swallowed hard as more tears fell freely from his face, so this is how it's going to be from now on huh? I don't like it one bit. It's too lonely, it's too quiet. He thought with a long sigh as a cool breeze pushed his hair on his face, when he brushed it aside he looked up to see Miku stand in front of him. Her hair dancing playfully in the wind "You've been staring at the empty seat for quite some time." She sat down next to him "penny for your thoughts?" she asked while giving him a playful look. Len shrugged "I'm going to go down and give the ok to set Rin free, then in a few hours I'm going to lose my sister forever. I have a lot to think about," he looked ahead of him to see a bird fly by "Where do I go from here? We had plans; to finish school then college and go into Vocaloid full time maybe do some acting, ….god she really wanted to be in the movies" Len started to cry "she wanted to be known all around the world, she wanted me to be along for the ride, I hate this Miku, she had her whole life in front of her but thanks to this rare form of cancer that only a few people have heard of she could never do any of the things she wanted. Ever again." Len turned to see Miku tear up she grabbed him into a hug "It's gonna be ok Len, I promise." "I hope your right because I really wanted her dreams to come true" he said in-between sobs. He looked at the sun setting the sky now turning a hint of pink and blue, the wind giving a slow breeze. "It's time to let her go" Len said as he looked down at a red faced Miku, Miku nodded her head wiping away her tears "Man I have cried way too much today." She said jokingly "good thing I didn't wear any mascara." Both Len and Miku laughed "you would make a horrible clown." That comment earned him a punch on the shoulder "Hey the nurse said no more roughhousing!" Miku left stomping "Just come on already!" she said as she held the door for him.

It was about eleven forty-five when Rin was taken off the machines and was able to leave the waking world what everyone didn't see was a small smile play across her lips and a tear escape from her eyes one last time.

~Another Year Later~

Len was sitting at his desk studying his finals when he finally got the urge to read the not Rin left him, he braced himself as he started to read it.

"To my dearest brother if your reading this then I guess I left this world, now I know you, after my funeral you decided to stay in our apartment, didn't you? And I also bet that you two got into it again, I swear you two are hopeless." This made Len chuckle for a bit "yeah but he's the one that started it!" he continued to read.

Annnd I wager you going to say he's the one that started it! I call bull!

Len blinked a few times while looking around the room.

Listen, you need to move out, get a new place start I want you to be happy. I know it's going to take some time, but I think it would do you some good to start a new, get a new wardrobe, find a girlfriend, meet new people, Hell maybe even start a new family. Don't think just because I'm gone you are going to give up on singing! I will Not let that happen. I know you so well that you are sitting at your desk NOT EVEN STUDYING!

Len began to protest "Yes I am I have a math test next week!"

No, you're not Look down idiot!

Len looked down to see lyrics written down all over his math note book "H-HOW DID YOU?"

Because you are my twin and I know you better than anyone else, this was your dream just as much as mine, even though I won't be there to cheer you on in person doesn't mean I not cheering you on in the afterlife. DUMMY! Promise me this, that you call up Miku, or Luka and give them the shock of their life. Please live happily that's all I ask of you.

It took Len sometime before he got up from his desk. He then stood in the corner of his room where before him hung the mirror. He thought once Rin was gone the mirror would crack but it's as beautiful as ever. Len turned off the lights in his room, so the moonlight could light up his room of the prettiest of blue that he ever seen in his life. He grabbed a pair of scissors from his desk then began to cut his hair with a smile. The next day he called both Miku and Luka for a visit seeing as it's a couple months since they last saw each other. What made Miku and Luka was to see a very tall Len with short jet-black hair. "W-what on earth did you do to your hair?" ask Miku as she rushed to touch it. "I found Rin's letter and thought it was time for a style change." He said smiling as Luka took out her cell phone to take a picture.
