Authors Note: I will probably only be able to update this story about once a week or so, since I work full time and home school, but I will try to update regularly. This is my first fanfic and I would love to hear your thoughts on it, so please review!

I awoke reluctantly to the sound of a soft knock on my bedroom door. "Who is it?" I asked groggily as I moved to sit up in the bed.

"Bella, it's Jacob. Can I come in?" a voice whispered softly from the other side of the door. I looked over to my alarm clock on the bedside table. Two forty-five in the morning. What could he be wanting this early? I got out of bed slowly and put on my robe. Rubbing the sleep out of my eyes, I walked over to the door.

"Jacob, what are you doing here?" I asked as I opened the door to the man standing on the other side of it.

"Bella, I'm sorry to wake you, but I have to tell you something" he replied. "Can we go sit in the living room for a few minutes?" I looked up into his face, and the sorrow I saw in them caused my heart to stop. I nodded and closed the door behind me. We walked silently down the hall and into the living room. Then we sat down next to each other on my old leather couch.

"What's this all about Jacob?" I asked as I looked anxiously toward him.

"It's about Levi and Rachel. Something terrible has happened." Jacob slowly replied as he looked down at his hands.

Panic seized me as I struggled to comprehend what that could mean. Dr. Levi Black, my husband of ten years and Jacob's older brother had been working the night shift in the ER that night along with my sister Rachel who was a first year intern. I knew working there could be dangerous, but that knowledge did nothing to prepare me for the answer to my next question. "Are.. are they okay?" I croaked in terror.

Jacob gave a ragged sigh, and I could tell he was struggling to hold back the tears standing in his eyes. He took my hands gently in his and attempted to tell his terrible story. "A man came into the ER tonight with trauma from a MVA. There was a lot of bleeding and Levi and Rachel and a couple of the nurses rushed to his bedside and started to try and stop it. He was high on Meth and just went crazy. I don't know how he even found the strength in the shape he was in, but he pulled out a gun and started shooting around the room. Security tried to get back there when the shooting started, but it all happened so fast nobody could get in there before it was over. The nurses were wounded really bad, and they rushed them right to surgery. But ..." Jacob began to tremble and the the tears he had been fighting began to spill down his cheeks. Sickness gnawed at the pit of my stomach as I waited for the news that I knew would be coming next. "By the time they could get to them, it was already too late for Levi and Rachel. They're..." Jacob choked on the words. "They're gone, Bella."

Grief hit me like a tidal wave. I gasped desperately, straining to find air. I lost all my strength and crumpled to the floor in agony. The world around me fell away as great, strangling sobs attacked me from within. Jacob sat on the floor next to me and pulled me into his arms as his last thread of control broke apart and he matched my grief with his own loud, wracking sobs.
