Chapter one: we are not alone.

The sun shined high over New york city. The cry of birds echoed through the city, tossing themselves between the sky scrapers that soared above the flora infested streets. The foot steps of four single humans were muddled against the rubble that they walked on. Zoey made her way towards the side walk, breaking free of the sea of abondoned cars.

"Louis?" She called out. Her voice echoed just like the bird cries.

"What is it?" He said coming up from behind her.

"Nothing just don't disappear like that. You scared me" She said. Louis held back a chuckle and motioned for her to follow him.

"Francis and the old man found a convience store. Lets go." He said. Zoey eagerly followed him. When they entered the shanty store, her eyes were immidietly drawn to Francis' enormous figure. He weas easily the biggest of the four. Bill Examined the canned good and put several into his ruck sack which dangled at his side.

"Here Zoe, you carry these." He said point to a small pile on the counter. 4 cans of random food and three bottles of water.

"I can carry more than this you know. " She argued. She stuffed the provisions into her sack, barely caring for order. "

"I know you can but don't be stubborn. You wouldn't be so energetic later on if you carried anymore than that." Bill scolded. She shfited the strap across her chest and walked around the store herself. Nothing useful was left. She eyed the old magazines that were flimsy with decay. She missed the way things were, she would have easily put up with the stress of a normal day compared to the stress she faced now. Of survival.

She walked out the door and looked at the sky scrapper and how it stood tall and glorious in the sun. Because of the abscence f honking horns and millions of footsteps ,it was peacefully eerie. The whole city was that way.

"Hey. Don't go wandering off. It's dangerous around here. " Francis said.

"I know. Just-getting some fresh air."

He heaved one hearty burst of laughter.

"Plenty of that goin' around No cars to pollute the earth." He mumbled.

"I didn't think you gave a damn about global warming" Bill teased.

"I've always hated the idea ofi t. But now it's guarrunteed not to happen now is it?" Francis retorted.

The four of them finished taking what they could then swiftly made their way down the streets. The the sun was setting quickly, and the darker it got , the faster the survivors moved. They made there way to a train yard where they decided to haul in one of the cars for the night.

"We can close the doors and bar them...We should be safe that way. " Bill said.

"Are you sure?" Zoey asked with a worried tone.

"Yeah, those things are heavy enoguh and they won't be able to open them from the outside anyway. "

They sound an inconspicuious car and lifted themselves inside. Francis and Zoey sealed and bared one door, while Bill and Louis sealed and barred the other. They took out their guns and huddled near the end of the car and waited for the grtesque sounds of the ngiht to begin. First one blood curdliong scream then another, then a swarm of them. Zoey trembled everytime she heard a louder one break the short silence.

"To think intelligent human beings have been reduced to this." She whispered.

" well, at least we've got eachother."
