Chapter 1: The beginning of the end?
"Thump….. thump……… thump" . I heard the noises above. "Thump, thump, thump". I sat still, trying not to breath. "Thump, thump, thump". They were right above the trap door. Now the only thing that separated me from sure death was an inch of wood and a vintage rug. Nothing. I listened. "Thump, thump, thump". "Bang", the door shut. I exhaled. I waited in the underground room for 4 days with only a loaf of bread and a half a gallon of water while the Germans moved out. Finally 4 days later Mrs. Majewski came to fetch me from the hiding. If you haven't already figured it out, I am Jewish. My name is Avron Cone. I am 18 years of age. Before the war, I worked in my father's store. He was a baker. WAS. Unfortunately I am unsure of his ware about. We fled when the war broke out. But one night, we were on the run from a group of Germans on patrol we fled separate ways and I have not heard nor seen anything about him. Anyways, Mrs. Majewski came to fetch me. She informed me that the Germans had left, moving north. She gave me some of her famous stew. I ate it up as fast as possible. I was starving! She gave me a new book. I sat there with that book and read and read until I fell asleep in my annex, under the inch of floor board and the vintage rug. Nothing to do but wait.
