I've lost control of my life.

Here I am, a sixteen year old girl with straight A's and B's in all her classes and loving parents and a beautiful face and body and I'm watching stupid alien movies with my friends on a big couch that is practically eating me alive. How the hell did I end up here?

My life has always been pretty boring since I, you know, live in a small town where absolutely nothing ever happens. I've always hated it here. I just feel so confined. There is nowhere to adventure and find new things. You can't even keep secrets here. Everyone knows each other because everyone grew up together because everyone goes to the same school. I always wanted to leave. That's why, when Mom and Dad told me about going to Hawaii for the summer, I was so incredibly happy that I almost cried. Although, it turned out that just the two of them were going.

"We need some alone time." They said, "A second honeymoon, and don't worry, we left plenty of money on Aradia's headboard." So that was that, my sister Damara and I were left alone together for the whole summer. Amazing. Although, a few days after my parents left, I came home from work to find a note from Damara on my bedroom door:

Sis,

Don't tell Mom and Dad,

But I'm gonna go live with

My boyfriend for the summer

Don't get into too much trouble. ;)

Love,

Damara M.

And just like that, I was left alone for the entire summer. Well hey; at least she didn't steal the money my parents left. Such a great sister.

So, that's how I ended up here, in Feferi's living room, eating pizza and watching the worst alien movies ever. Finally, after the movie was over, I decided that I had gotten enough alien in my system for one night and left. After saying my goodbyes, I left her mansion (God, her parents are loaded) and headed down to the lake. I don't live on the lake or anything if that's what you were thinking, I just like hanging out there. It's always incredibly quiet and still and it seems like the world has just stopped for a few brief minutes.

I sigh, stretching, and feeling the damp grass under my toes as I wiggle out of my shoes, smiling ever-so-slightly. Opening my eyes, I lie down and stare up at the stars. Every summer was always the same. I would just go to work, hang out with friends, come home and repeat. Although each year, Feferi takes everyone up to her beach house and we stay there for a few weeks before coming back home and facing reality again. The beach house was always the best part of the whole summer and I always looked forward to it.

Soon, I'm disrupted from my day dreaming by a…shooting star? No…This—whatever it is—is coming towards me at full speed, zigzagging across the sky. Before I can register what is happening, the object falls out of the sky and lands in the lake, causing me to get up and run behind a tree, out of breath, deep, brown eyes widened by fear and surprise.

Somehow, I don't think this summer is going to be very mundane.
