E.D. sighed. Was this really how she was going to spend her summer?
Jake was away at his new job in town, as he was most weekdays. She'd been told numerous times to leave the store because she was distracting him. E.D. had been mortified. Was she really being the girl who bothered her boyfriend at work? Not that Jake was E.D.'s boyfriend or anything. They were just friends, that's all.
And things were pretty hectic over at Wit's End. The summer camp was booming, but E.D. swore this was a bad batch of kids. There was just one person really into it. Her name was Jane, and she was thrilled to meet Sybil Applewhite, one of her favorite authors. She was disappointed at the end of Sybil's latest series, but understood what it was like to have writer's block. Jane absolutely adored everything at the Creative Academy, it "inspired her to no limit". E.D. was getting more and more irritated with Jane every day. The other kids reminded her of Ginger and Cinnamon last summer- except the fact that they enjoyed themselves in the end. Their parents had obviously dumped them there and hoped they sucked it up. E.D. didn't blame the kids for being bratty; she would be cranky too if she were dumped here with her crazy family. Right now things were settling down and E.D. was supposed to be overseeing a game of Duck, Duck, Goose that, like always, was being enjoyed only by Jane. E.D. wondered if Jane was even trying to get people out.
But just then, Cordelia came sprinting out of the house. "Is Jane Penderwick here? Her family is here to pick her up. And don't ask why, I don't know."
Jane looked stunned, then ran to her cabin to get her things. E.D. saw tears in her eyes. She felt bad for Jane. Maybe Jane wasn't such a pain after all. She was the only one who was really into... anything at camp.
Just then, a little girl with curly brown hair, an even younger little boy with red hair, and a big black dog came tiptoeing out of the house. "Shhh," the girl said to the dog. "Secret agents are always careful and quiet in a new place."
E.D. let out a sigh once again. The girl must be Jane's sister, she was like a miniature Jane. But E.D. had to focus on supervising the game, where a fight had broken out over who was to be "It". She headed toward the fight, forgetting about the two children and the dog.
Batty and Ben were being secret agents. They had to investigate the scene, find Jane, and bring her back to safety. Batty didn't know why they were getting Jane from camp, but it had to be a pretty good reason. That was Hound's mission. To find out what the grownups and Rosalind were talking about. Then Batty heard something. A goat? A goat! She, Ben, and Hound followed the sound to the goat pen. Batty squealed. She loved goats!
Rosalind looked around. The room was short a few Penderwicks. "Where are Batty, Ben, and Hound?" She whispered to Skye.
"Ugh, they ran off again? They're probably outside. It's OK, Rosy. I'll find them."
Rosalind frowned. Since when does Skye volunteer to help out with Batty?
Another girl was coming out of the house. E.D. couldn't guess who she was, if she was related to Jane or not. She had short blonde hair and blue eyes. She wore a black t-shirt. Very practical. E.D. smiled. Maybe she should say hi to the girl. Maybe they could be friends.
