Peace At My Window
The cool night air drifts in and hits my face as I open the window of my office. I breathe in the fresh autumn air, and as the smell of the night reaches my nostrils I feel strangely refreshed. If I listen carefully I can hear the distant hooting of owls and the swishing of wings as they fly past my window, hunting after a long day of delivering letters.
Yes. It had been a very long day. I should have asked Severus for some of his dreamless sleep potion, but I had not the heart to do so. Harry needed it more than me, and besides, even if there had been enough, I felt too guilty to take it. I had too much to do.
I was mainly concerned about making sure I told Harry everything. Last night I told him what I had been putting off since his first day at Hogwarts. I told him about the prophecy. God help him. He has too much responsibility for a boy of his age, yet he has faced many challenges even grown Wizards have trouble coping with.
On top of that enormous responsibility he has to endure, he has no parents to help him and guide him through this task. Sirius was the closest thing to a parent the boy had, and now he's gone. If I had told Harry earlier - If I had not ignored Severus Snape's unwillingness to teach Legilimency to him - If I had only taken matters into my own hands earlier... maybe Sirius would still be here for Harry.
I told the school about the events of last night. They all sat there at breakfast this morning, dumbfounded and amazed. They didn't know whether to laugh at me for being the old fool they think I am, or cry because they knew I was telling the truth. I told the silent hall everything - well, almost everything...as much as I could bare to tell them.
Harry wasn't there. I had ordered him bed rest and company from his closest friends. I warned the school not to disturb him - Though Molly made sure of that in her own accord.
I felt the need to make things right.
So I visited Voldemort in the afternoon. Fawkes found where he was hiding, currently torturing Bellatrix Lestrange for allowing the other Death Eaters to get caught.
Her screams filled the small clearing in the woods, her body cringing under the cruciatus curse. As Fawkes transported me to the scene, he stopped, sensing my prescience.
He was very weak. He could not fight me. I told him what I had to say before he apparated after Bellatrix.
Coward.
I would have taken him out there and then if I didn't already know the prophecy.
Breathing in the cool air again I let my thoughts run smoothly through my mind. Another owl flutters past my window, letting out a muffled hoot.
I wonder how long this war will go on?
It is so hard to believe the evil on our doorstep, when you can stand at your window so much at peace...
