A/N: I do not own the Kane Chronicles or the Indigo Girls, or their amazing song, Secure Yourself.
Secure yourself to Heaven,
Hold on tight, the night has come
Fasten up your earthly burdens,
You have just begun…
Sadie watched as Walt lay in the bed. He jerked every once in a while, then lay still for a little bit.
Jaz watched too. She wished with all her heart she could do more for Walt, but there was a limit to her healing abilities. The most she could do was ease his pain and help him sleep.
In the ink of an eye I saw you bleeding,
Through thunder I could hear you scream,
Solid to the air I breathe,
Open-eyed and fast asleep
Thunder boomed outside, startling them both. Neither had realized that it was raining outside; it seemed to match their moods. Sad, angry, hopeless.
Walt jolted awake. He saw the two girls watching him. "Sadie… Jaz…" he gasped.
Jaz hushed him back into the bed. "Don't talk."
Walt shook his head no. He sat up and turned to Sadie. "Choose… Anubis," he panted, breathless. "Less… pain… for you."
He turned to Jaz. "I have… always loved you… both. Jaz… you've always been… the best friend… I've ever had."
Falling softly as the rain,
No footsteps ringing in your ears,
Ragged down, worn to the skin,
Warrior raging, have no fear
He breathed out and was gone. Jaz buried her head in Sadie's shoulder and started to cry. Sadie's own breath was coming in ragged gasps, as if she too were dying.
Carter entered the infirmary. He saw his sister and Jaz crying and looked at Walt's body in horror. "Sadie, Jaz, it's okay." He said, walking over to them.
Jaz looked up at Carter, tears streaming down her cheeks. "He never knew," she whispered. "I never had a chance to tell him."
Sadie looked down at the floor. There were hot tears coursing down her cheeks too.
I'm kneeling down with broken prayers
Hearts and bones from days of youth
Restless with an angel's wing
I dig a grave to bury you
Jaz and Sadie watched as Walt's sarcophagus was put in a small pyramid of his own. Anubis himself was there, directing the funeral and comforting Sadie.
Sadie and Jaz had each helped to painstakingly paint Walt's face on the lid of the sarcophagus. They had taken comfort in the simple task; it had allowed them to take their minds off of they agonizing grief they were both feeling.
No feet to fall, you need no ground,
Allowed to glide right through the sun,
Released from circles guarded tight,
Now we all are chosen ones
After the ceremony was finished, Sadie ran up to Anubis and buried her head in his chest. This surprised him, but he kept that to himself, as he almost liked it.
Jaz watched from afar. She went to the library and wept, tears streaming down her cheeks again.
Secure yourself to Heaven,
Hold on tight, the night has come
Fasten up your earthly burdens,
You have just begun…
