Touching your hand

Authors Note: I decided to write this tender scene between Rei and Shinji when I was remembering the days with my girlfriend on a beach under the moonlight. It made me sad to remember that moment, since my girlfriend left me for someone else. So I decided to make this one-shot for all of you who have a romantic relationship with someone you care. Don't let go of the one you care, since it will leave an empty spot in your heart.
Shinji had woken up from his sleep after he was released from inside the Eva. He looked at the familiar ceiling and noticed that he was in a hospital gown again and decided to go and watch the artificial sun outside.
But when he opened the door, he saw Rei Ayanami coming down the hallway with a tray of food.
Her face showed relief. "Ikari-kun. You're awake." She said softly.
"Ayanami." Shinji said quietly, glad from seeing her.
The silence fell upon them and it was uncomfortable, until Shinji said: "Thank you Ayanami."
"For what?" She asked.
"For coming to see me. And being my guide." Shinji answered.
"Your guide?" She wondered.
"I remember that while I was in the Eva, I came out from there, so I could see you again. It was like I heard your voice calling me." He explained.
Rei blushed in light shade of pink.
"And I'm glad to be back here with you." He said with a smile that was reserved only for her.
Her blush deepened.
"Ayanami, may I show you something?" Shinji asked her.
"What is it that you want to show me?" She inquired.
"A scene here in Geofront. It's not far from here." He answered.
"Okay." Rei answered in her soft voice.
Shinji led Rei through the corridors of NERV to the place where the fountain and a garden was.
Rei looked at the scenery and said: "It's beautiful."
Shinji thought: 'Not nearly as beautiful as you Rei-Chan.'
Rei had gone to her knees and sank her right hand under the water and said: "I never knew about this place."
"You didn't know and you have been working here longer then Misato-san?"
Shinji asked, really puzzled.
"I don't go to the places where I don't have to." She said.
Shinji remained silent from understanding her reason.
"At the first time, it felt nothing." Rei said suddenly.
"What didn't feel?" Shinji asked in puzzlement.
"Your hand." She said.
Then Shinji remembered that he first touched her when he held her when she was injured and fallen off from the gurney.
"The second time felt a little unpleasant. I think." She then said.
Shinji paled a little when he remembered falling on top of her nude for and accidentally touched her bare breast.
"Oh that. I'm really sorry about it..." He started but was interrupted.
"Don't be. It wasn't all bad." She said and then continued.
"At the third time it felt warm. I felt your body heat through the plugsuit."
Shinji remembered when he saved her from her entry plug after he killed the fifth Angel.
"At the fourth time I was happy that you cared for me." She said.
Shinji then recalled when she burned her finger on the teapot and he quickly put her hand under a cold water.
"May I touch you hand again?" Rei asked after Shinji stopped remembering the past actions.
"Uhhh. Sure." Shinji stammered at first, but then said it calmly.
Rei approached him and extended her hand and Shinji did the same. Then their hands were interlocked together and then they both felt a spark of something.
They both slowly pulled each other in a gentle hug. Rei's head on his chest and their hands around each other.
Rei thought: 'This new emotion is weird to me. Could this be love?'
Shinji thought: 'This is love. I can see this working out. Rei-chan, I will keep you safe and then marry you someday.'
