Amethyst kicked a stone as she sauntered into the barn. Anger rushed through her and she found herself kicking yet another. Pain erupted in her toe She grumbled before sitting down on a pile of hay and waiting. Amethyst couldn't properly explain her anger at Peridot, it was just there. Perhaps it was being told she was abnormal, different, but, she already knew that. Then Amethyst remembered, defective. The word clicked her in head and she remembered the exact words the green gem had spoken to her, "You're a fine class soldier except that you're defective."
"Defective?" She heard her voice replay in the memory.
Peridot responded again voice chirpy as ever "Well sure, you're small!"
Amethyst grumbled as she could over hear Pearl's voice outside, "She's having another one her temper tantrums, I'm surprised you all came back intact."
"Yeah." Amethyst replied from inside the barn.
Silence filled the air as Amethyst once against lost herself in her thoughts. She dropped her head down and stared towards the ground for a moment.
She heard feet pattering lightly into the barn and Amethyst lifted her head. Before her was Pearl, the tall crystal gem was looking at her observing her and for some reason was unaware of her sudden movement. "Pearl." She said quietly.
The other gem seemed to snap into focus, "Oh Amethyst!" She replied, "I-I was just coming in here to get some more tungsten for the drill, I should be going now." Pearl replied as she began to inch out of the barn.
"Pearl," Amethyst began, she smacked a pile of hay near her, "Sit down."
Pearl came once again near Amethyst and sat down atop a stack of hay right beside her. "Why did you really come?" Amethyst asked quietly.
"I saw you angrily saunter off as soon as Peridot tried to get your attention, did something happen between you two?"
"No." Amethyst kicked another stone aggressively, "Nothing happened."
Pearl sighed as she glanced at Amethyst, "I can't help you unless you tell me what's bothering you Amethyst."
Amethyst felt herself engulfed in a fit of rage as she began to shout. "WHAT DO YOU KNOW!? YOU'RE JUST BUILT TO BE A PUNY LITTLE SERVANT MEANT FOR STANDING AROUND AND HOLDING STUFF! YOU'RE JUST A DEFECTIVE MESS! HOW COULD YOU EVER UNDERSTAND HOW I FEEL!?
Pearl froze as she glanced back over to Amethyst her eyes brimming with tears as she got up and began to leave the barn. "No wait!" Amethyst yelped, "Stop I'm sorry I said all that I'm just…. just so so mad."
Pearl sat down again, "You really didn't mean those things right?"
"I- Of course not!"
Pearl composed herself wiping her tears from her eyes, "So what happened between you and Peridot."
Amethyst sighed before taking a few deep breaths. "She...she called me…" Amethyst clenched her fist, "Defective…"
"Is that why you called me defective, Amethyst?" Pearl asked as she reached to take Amethyst's hand.
"Y-yeah, I think it is…" Amethyst replied as she wrapped her hand around Pearl's.
"Well I'll tell you something. We can both be defective Amethyst, we know we aren't perfect but… but we've got one another."
"Yeah." Amethyst replied quietly as she rested her head against Pearl's shoulder, "This is nice."
Pearl hummed softly and smiled, "It is." And then she proceeded to gently stroke Amethyst's wavy hair.
