Author's Note: I originally wrote this snippet while in the midst of writing a totally different story for a totally different fandom (Grounded, in case anyone's wondering). I typed it out with the intention of saving it for later. I may still build a fic around this, but the little bit I have still, after 2 weeks, reads strong enough to stand alone. Summary meant as a complement to Saltwater Tears; though different fandoms, I kind of liked the contrast between "didn't say" and "did say."

"I wish you'd never gotten your memories back!"

It was a hateful thing to say, and Yugi didn't really mean it, except he did mean it a little bit. Now that his Yami knew who he was they'd have to face off, and Yugi was not looking forward to the duel. He didn't want to fight the one person closest to his heart, nor did he want to be separated from Yami at the duel's end. He knew he'd go through with it - the part inside of him that was Good and did the Right Thing demanded it - but the other part of his heart cried out, hurting.

After all, if Yami hadn't regained his memory, they'd have been able to stay together forever - just as they'd promised in a time that seemed so long ago.
