Pairing(s): Emma/Regina
Warning(s): could be read as slight slash, or simply friendship, or even familial.
Note(s): this was in response to a prompt my friend left me, either for Snow/Queen or Emma/Queen. I went with Emma/Queen.
Prompt: 'I made my mistakes, got nowhere to run, the night goes on...' [Emma/Queen]

Once upon a time..

They stand on the edge of everything, and on the edge of nothing. Two women, divided by years of hate, and fury, and resentment. The very definition of opposites.

Blond versus brunette. Light versus dark. Good versus evil.

Well, that last depends on who you ask.

Regina looks at Emma, really looks at her, and sees everything she could have had – a life, a family, love – if only she had let go of her hatred.

Emma looks at Regina and sees what she could have become – bitter, and cold, and alone – if only she hadn't listened to the kid.

Two women, opposites to the world, but more alike than either would like to admit. Two women, standing on the edge of everything, and on the edge of nothing. Neither can take that final step forward. Neither wants to take the final step back.

So they stand there, just looking at one another.

Two women, so alike. They've both made mistakes, but now they're both tired.

A hand reaches out and clasps the other. Light against dark. Fingers tangle together. The fall into everything is electrifying and wonderful, and oh-so-scary.

Mistakes can be rectified, people can be forgiven.

And they all lived happily ever after.
