Chapter 1 - Hope

It was that time of the year again. No, not as Jack would say, the time where she takes up knitting for a week. Which reminded her, she needed to buy some more wool...anyway. It was Liz's birthay. She woke up bright and early. Not helped by the fact Jenna had text her. She flicked on her phone and read the message.
'Get 2 wrk now. xx'
Aw. They probably had a surprise for her, just like they had done for Jenna's birthday. She was such a good friend. Liz didn't know why she ever doubted her sometimes.
Liz wanted to look good today. It was her time to shine. Who said nerdy couldn't ever look good? Actually. Don't answer that.
Pulling an all too familiar mint green and bold black sweater from her wardrobe, she started to sing 'You're Never Fully Dressed (Without a Smile)' from the musical Annie. Liz actually never admitted it to anyone, but she loved musicals. If she HAD admitted it to anyone, it would be more embarassing than the time Jack walked in on her when she tiredly and drunkenly decided to wash in the mens bathroom at work.
Hopefully, that wouldn't happen today, because today was of course, her birthday.
She pulled up a stool at her breakfast bar-cum-dining table. Sometimes, Liz didn't mind living the simple life. Because sometimes, the simple life was good. Pouring her cereal ino the bowl, her phone beeped once again. This time it was Jack!
'Where r u Lemon?'
Aw. Jack actually cared about her birthday. Well this was an opportunity Liz couldn't miss! She decided to leave her cereal and be hungry for the rest of the day, as long as she could go through the day having everyone be happy about her birthday! Liz grabbed her bag and ran out the door skipping and singing.
On second thoughts she ran straight back in, tipped out the contents of her bag except for her phone and keys, and poured the dry cereal into her bag. 'Portable AND delicious.' Liz grinned, exiting her apartment for the second time, feeling more accomplished and happier than ever after her brain wave.
