I know that I'm in the middle of another story (being For Now: Continuing On), so this one will not be updated as frequently as that one. I got the idea for this story while I was thinking up the next couple of chapter for my other story, and decided to start this. I'll update with a new chapter probably once a week or once every week and a half. As is the rule in my stories, it will end happily :). Enjoy!

Sue sat trying vainly to doze off as her boyfriend, Matt, drove her along the state route just outside of DC. She didn't mind not driving, and he loved it, so she let him drive.

They were on their way to…well, somewhere. He hadn't told her yet. He had been planning this for some time now, but the last case had taken almost 2 weeks of frenzied investigation, running, planning, and execution, trying to catch Muhammad Abdingol, the Prince of Terror's right hand man, before he vanished again. They had just finished it, and Matt had begged her to go out with him that evening. He had become very insistent when he had showed up to drive her home and saw her walking with Jack. Jack was insisting that she go home and rest, and they were both getting agitated, Jack because he was as exhausted as Sue, and Matt because…well, she didn't know. To keep the peace, she had went with Matt on the condition that he let her sleep on the way to wherever he was taking her. Now she was wishing that she had listened to Jack, who had insisted that she be fed, watered, and put to bed…

She dragged her thoughts away from the dark haired agent. This was getting ridiculous. It had been a year since she had decided to stay, and had been devastated that Jack hadn't ever finished what he had began before Myles walked into the hallway, interrupting him.

Then she had met Matt; a sweet, intelligent, kind, faith-filled man at a retreat that she had gone on. He was quite handsome. When he had asked for her number, she had shyly given it to him, blushing furiously. They had been dating for 9 months now, and Matt was the closest friend that she had. Well, closest of anyone not named Jack.

Matt had been…wary of her relationship with Jack. He never said anything, but she could see that he was concerned about Jack possibly stealing her heart away. And though he didn't say anything, she knew that he wanted her to stop spending so much time with him. So, because she wanted to make him happy, she had cut back how often she hung out with Jack outside of work, only making him dinner once every two weeks. She rarely admitted to herself that she went all out making those dinners, and seeing Jack beaming and obviously enjoying himself made her happy. He was her best friend, and she liked making him happy. Matt wasn't completely mollified, but again, didn't demand her to stop.

But she couldn't help it. She worked with Jack, for Pete's sake. She was always around him, going to lunch with him, talking with him. He was her best friend and she wasn't giving that up. But it wasn't getting any easier, like she thought it would. Of course, these past few weeks didn't help. She was around him all the time during the case, sharing all meals, heck, they even slept in the Hoover building. He had saved her life twice on the case, and she had saved his at least once. Those things bind people together.

Yet…Jack started dating Rachel 8 months ago; a brown haired beauty, incredibly kind, faith-filled, and sweet. She bent over backwards trying to take care of him; putting up with his shyness, his tendency not to eat well or sleep, his tendency for having to cancel dates for work, and, of course, his close friendship with Sue. Rachel had befriended Sue, and Sue was happy that Jack had found a woman to love him like he deserved to be loved. After all, Rachel was undoubtedly persuading Jack to eat something relatively healthy right now, and ushering him off to bed before she left. So Sue was happy with it. She kept repeating that to herself until she believed it, at least outside of her subconscious.

Anyways, she had Matt, and he would do anything for her. He put up with as much as Rachel, and poured himself out to try to care for her. She was just bothered that she was having so much trouble giving that back to him. Oh, she loved him, loved him dearly. More dearly than she had ever loved one of her boyfriends. He was pretty much what she had asked God for when she was a little girl. It was so wonderful to be with him, to talk to him, to just spend time with him. She couldn't believe that she had finally gotten someone like that to be hers, and hers alone.

She was contemplating everything that Matt meant to her when she suddenly felt his hand stretch in front of her. Before she could open her eyes, she felt a massive impact. Then nothing.

Jack couldn't believe his eyes. Sue was walking towards him dressed in a bathrobe with a mischievous look in her eyes. The gold band on her finger, matching his, glinted as she wrapped her arms around him. "Well, my dear husband. Cat got your tongue? I'm very possessive, so I want it back." She kissed him passionately, tangling her tongue around his, sliding her hands along his back. He returned the kiss with as much heat as her, sliding a hand down her neck to her shoulders. Then he heard his phone ring. He began to ignore it, concentrating on his beautiful wife. The ringing got louder and louder until he suddenly came awake.

Completely disoriented, Jack flailed for his phone, smacking his hand off of the bedside stand. The pain brought him more fully awake, and cursing, found his phone. "Hudson, and it had better be good!"

"Jack, it's D. I just got a call from St. Mary's Hospital. Sue got into a terrible car accident and is there. I don't know how bad, but come as soon as you can. The rest of the team will be there."

"I'll be along!" He began trying to pull his stuff together, cursing steadily growing louder and coarser as his exhausted mind struggled to put together reality and forget the dream. Then the enormity of what he heard from D hit him. Sue was hurt, badly so it seemed. A stream of foul language continued as he ran frantically from his apartment and flew down the road, blue light flashing. His phone went off again, and he yanked it out.

"Hudson!" Then he suddenly became very still, driving completely on auto-pilot. "Understood." He hung up and pressed down on the accelerator, speeding to his destination. He couldn't believe it…He wouldn't believe it until he got there…

Jack ran into the side room that he was directed to, and saw D standing with the priest in the middle of the room. Tara was curled in Bobby's arms, crying openly, while Myles held Lucy as she sobbed. The priest looked at him. "Jack?" Jack nodded, not trusting his voice. "D called to let you know?" Jack nodded again and spoke, his voice breaking. "I need to hear it from you, Father. Please."

The priest looked at him, compassion in his eyes. "I'm sorry, Jack. Rachel didn't make it. Neither did Matt." Jack nodded slowly, a hard mask sliding over his features shielding every emotion from the outside, shoving it deep until he could deal with it later. "Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord, and let the perpetual light shine upon them. May their souls, and the souls of the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace." And he made the sign of the cross. He couldn't believe that it was Rachel that was in the other car that hit Sue's. The odds were so slim that it would be intriguing if it wasn't so devastating.

"Sue?" The priest was concerned seeing him shut down everything so completely. It wasn't the sign of a healthy way of dealing with stress. And this man looked like he'd been run through a meat grinder. "She will live. She's been banged up quite a bit, but she should survive." Jack nodded, then walked away and sat down, waiting. D walked over to him.

"Jack." Jack looked up at him, his face studiously blank. "Yes, D?" D looked at him, very concerned. "Jack, you're scaring me. You've shut down."

Jack looked at him. "I can't deal with the pain right now, D. So I'm hiding from it for the time. When we find out Sue's condition, I can let my pain run free. Until then, I'm running from it. Please don't try to bring it out before then. I'm short on everything, and emotional strength is one of the one's I'm weakest in right now."

He couldn't even dream up a lie to get D to relax. So he just sat there and began praying a rosary, the repetition relaxing him as he entrusted Sue to God, in addition to the souls of Rachel and Matt.
