And Then Another

The first man who loved her smelled of myrtle, and he gave her diamonds from Earth. She was young and her only love was for the Princess she had devoted her life to. He was a lot older than her and captivated by her beauty as all men were. When introduced he thought she was a witch, she had stolen his heart the moment she smiled at him.

"Who do you desire most?" he had asked one day when they had become friends. Venus had suitors all around the kingdom.

"I desire no one," she replied gazing up at the Earth where she knew Serenity has snuck off to.

"Surely you desire someone." Venus grabbed his hands, looked him in the eyes. "There is no person I can desire." Her beauty and power was legendary, and all who loved her, loved her for just that. And who could ever return the love of a man who sought you out because you'd make a lovely trophy? No, she would never bestow her love on any man.

He smiled, pulled her into his arms. "Then I am afraid that I am forever to live in want."

The second man to love her loved many before her, and gave her himself. She was empty and hallow. She wanted what Serenity had found. And so she let him court her. Soon they were dinning together, dancing, and she felt that maybe…

"I want to feel this love you say you have for me, I want you to teach me how it lives, how it breathes, how it survives."

And the next minute, she was wrapped around him. She wanted to devour him if that meant that this feeling, so absolutely fill with something so sinful and sweet, could last forever. But as he positioned himself in her, brought her to euphoria, she knew that this would never last. When it was over they were sweaty and she lay on top of him, her breathing fast, her face flushed. Divine, he thought. Then he whispered words of love; she could never say she loved him back.

The third man to love her was like stone, and gave her nothing. He lived for another, breathed for another, and would die for another. He had never told her he loved her but she knew, he was a man of few words, but she understood. He refused to let her get close, there was no point in loving a man who would honor you second, he thought. There was nothing left to give her but the love that could never be.

So when the end came near she was tired, bloody, and ready to die.

Then he was before her with a sword as dangerous as the gods. When he plunged it deep into her heart he gave her everything.

He gave her pain, sorrow, betrayal, anger, death.

And then she loved him back.
