Prologue
The wind shook the trees, prompting the leaves to shiver. Bright stars shimmered in the cool dark sky and crickets chirped. I could hear owls too, singing their spooky songs through the night. Other animals hummed melodies unknown to man, creating the complete unshaken atmosphere of nature. But there was something the air. Something I felt wasn't right. I couldn't really explain it, but I could tell something absolutely awful was about to happen. And I know it sounds weird and crazy but… I smelled death.
Everything stopped, as if the world froze in time.
Two chilling minutes later, a girl and a boy cried out simultaneously.
I immediately sprinted through the woods as quickly as I possibly could. I eventually traveled to the source of the scream. I saw a boy lying on the ground. I got out my phone and shined a light on him for better vision. I remember having this sinking feeling that I knew who he was. I dialed 911 and told them my approximate location and everything else.
I walked slowly over to the boy and put two fingers on his neck to check for a pulse. There was one, but just barely. I turned his body over and nearly screamed as my eyes locked on his mutilated face. He looked so scared… I remember hearing him moan. That moan made my stomach feel like it was twisting itself into a knot. I had blood all over my hands, for his face wasn't the only part of his body that had been destroyed. He had claw and bite marks all over him.
He managed to make out two words. "Help. Me." Then he died.
My throat tightened, and I felt my whole body shaking as he died in my arms.
The police and an ambulance arrived soon after and then I remembered that I heard a girl scream as well. I told them that and then searched, but they never found anyone.
It wasn't too much later after that I realized that the girl who screamed was me.
