Makeup, binding corsets, maintaining prim and proper hair and the sophisticated boots and dancing shoes were their lifestyle. And maybe they would have been happy with it if all they had known were accessories, dates, manners, beauty, and perfect poise.

But they didn't.

So both Mai and Téa relished the time when they would sneak away from their group of friends and the crowds, kick off their heels and run through the open parks, spin each other around and get dirt and grass on their dresses as they rolled onto the ground.

And all the time through it all, Téa laughed, stretching her arms out and Mai felt the wind through her hair, their fingers locked together and they knew for certain that it felt like freedom.

It was freedom from which a palace couldn't even obtain.
