Rebellion – Chapter 1

[A Death Note Story]

Even with Watari's check-ins, L seemed as lonely as ever in the giant headquarters.

L had finished all of the important cases that were laid around the headquarters and has had nothing to do other than playing chess with himself. Watari wasn't in at the time so nobody except himself would be his chess mate. Every time he moved a piece it would make an echoing clank that seemed to be mocking him. Even with this he played every move with the greatest ease, easily checkmating himself.

Then the phone rang. Another mocking noise, but this time ringing, echoed throughout the deserted headquarters. L jumped from his perch on the chair and strode to Watari's desk. L gingerly picked up the phone, pinching it like it was a molding piece of cake, and raised it to his ear.

"Hello?" he said with his voice that seemed tired, but the other end wouldn't notice due to the voice distortion device.

"Oh, um, Hi. Is this L's headquarters?" The voice seemed to be a teenager in high school, which is surprising. But it was a guy, as usual.

"Yes, it is. Why have you called?" L got right to the point, too depressed to even ask who the caller who they were.

"Well, I have this problem that I would like L to help me with. It's not like any of the cases L has probably done so it's ok if he doesn't want to do it." At this, the caller stammered, like he didn't want this problem to be pushed aside. L questioned what this guy wanted from him. Is it a set-up? Why is a high schooler calling him, asking for L's help in his own problem?

"What is the nature of this problem?" L was now getting bored with this prank call, but he wanted to see how far this teenager would go to meet him. There was a pause, and then the caller replied.

"Well, you probably won't believe me, but I have this bad case of split personalities. I've been able to control my other self since I was younger, but now it's getting way out of control," the caller began to seem desperate as he talked, "My other personality wants to become the god of this world and he's really mean and he comes out at random times and I can't be near my dad anymore because of it. I'm afraid that this other personality may take over my own body and start killing people. I just really need L's help!" The teen on the other end seemed like he was about to cry and beg, not knowing that L himself was listening to everything. This person's response seemed to strike a chord in L. He believed this kid was telling the truth, and was surprised by his own response.

"I will report this to L, who will contemplate whether he will help you."

"Oh, thank you, thank you. I'm sorry for disturbing you!" the caller seemed relieved.

The caller hung up, and L couldn't believe what he was doing. This wasn't like him, but he realized he wanted to help this person. L decided to contemplate it some more, and call back tomorrow.

The next day, the door of the elevator opened, and Watari walked in, noticing L's weird look.

"Did something happen?" The gentleman asked, with a hint of worry on his face.

"I just got another case." L responded, without a hint of depression in his words.
