AN: So this idea has been stuck in my head forever after watching Alice in Wonderland, but I'm just getting around to writing it, while I'm watching Alice in Wonderland...funny right?

This takes place in his fifth year and her fourth year. So it's when Umbridge is DADA teacher. This is also my first time writing Luna. Well, anyway, I hope you enjoy it(:

The Best People Are

He was sitting down by the Black Lake under the tall oak tree, trying to accomplish a spell from the other day. He doesn't know what it is, but he can concentrate better down by the Black Lake. Maybe it has to do with the gentle blowing breeze.

He hears footsteps growing closer.

Glancing over, he sees that it's Luna Lovegood; the Ravenclaw in Ginny's year that everyone thinks is loony. They've even given her that bloody awful nickname, which he hates. But she doesn't seem to care; she's off in her own little world most of the time.

"That was some nice wand work during yesterday's meeting," she spoke, filling the silence.

"I completely goofed up, but thanks anyway," he replies.

"If anything, I think Ron goofed up," she says.

Neville cracks a small smile. In a way, she was right. Ron did kind of goof up, allowing Hermione to knock him backwards with stupefy.

"I can't help but wonder if he meant to do that," he says, not realizing he was actually talking out loud.

"Maybe he let her do it because he's in love with her," Luna states.

She's in a different house and year, yet she wasn't blind to that fact.

"I think Fred and George even have a bet going on," Neville tells her. He's not even sure why he does, or why they're talking about Ron and Hermione in the first place, but he does. It's nice to have subtle conversation.

"That sounds like them," is all she says.

That's when Neville hears the whispers. He glances around and sees a group of people walking by them. He already knows what they're thinking and he gets this urge to toss them in the Black Lake. He knows what the general topic of their conversation is – why is he talking with that loon?

"People think that I'm loony, don't they?" she asks, as if she realizes what they're whispering about. "Everyone whispers about it all the time…I've heard it a million times before."

Neville slowly nods. "They do. But I'll let you in on a little secret someone once told me – all the best people are."

Luna smiles at him. "You're an alright person, Neville Longbottom. And I'm glad to have someone like you to consider a friend."
