It was a warm day in July. The grass was still wet from last night's dew still lying around. The sun's rays were shining down on the lake by the abandoned rock quarry as two children skipped rocks on the surface of the water.

"We really shouldn't be here," the young girl said, for what appeared to be the third time, as she eyed the "DANGER" and "PRIVATE POPERTY" signs.

"Relax, Angie. This place was shut down years ago, no one even knows we're here," the dirty blonde said, trying to reassure his sister as he tossed a rock at the lake; watching it skip three times, then sink.

"That's what I'm worried about," Angie muttered, "What if something happens? What if you fall in the lake? You know I can't swim that well, yet; let alone with the both of us!" she exclaimed worriedly. "Besides, we don't even know why it was shut down!" she said shakily, trying to keep the worry out of her tone, but failing miserably.

"That won't happen, Angie. Don't worry yourself. All we're doing is skipping rocks, no harm done. Now will you relax?" the boy said, and skipped a second rock across the water. Again, it skipped three times, and again it sank into the water.

"Fine," the girl sighed, giving in to her brother, Roark. "What's the worst that could happen anyway?" she thought to herself, as her brother threw the third rock in. And that's when the first strange thing happened.

He threw with all his might, but the third stone came skipping back. They looked at each other in amazement.

"It must've hit another rock or a log," said the older brother, who had somehow read exactly what his sister was thinking. Angie nodded, not really knowing what to say as Roark picked up the third rock from the shallow water and threw it again. Again, it skipped three times. Again, it skipped back.

The boy threw it two more times. Again, it skipped back; three times.

"What's going on?" he asked to himself, more than to his sister. He fiddled with the rock, examining it for anything that could've caused it to skip back. That's when the second thing happened.

The rock had eyes he realized. It was alive, the rock was alive! T hey gaped in astonishment as the rock jumped out of his hands, and scrabbled away on it's tiny legs.

And then the third thing happened…they ran.
