Only Together
A/N: Inspired by the P!nk/Adam Lambert duet of "Whataya Want From Me?"
"Stop."
The command was part whisper, part plea, and rather reluctant.
Roy didn't even have to ask what it was that was wrong. He knew at least some of the reasons, and he could guess at others.
Still, he leaned in defiantly, just barely pressing his lips to hers for one last second.
"You don't need to be afraid."
"I'm scared."
It was true, but only just. His eyes were mostly dead, just like hers; just like everyone's.
What could she do? She was frightened, too. They were monsters.
But if I can save even one life…
"I'm here."
"You can't give up. I won't let you."
If one gave up, the other wouldn't be able to survive.
It sounded romantic enough, but that wasn't (entirely) it; they just knew each other so well that one dream was all they were living for, and it would take both of them to make it come true.
The light seemed to re-enter Roy's eyes, and he straightened up.
"I'm sorry."
"Come back."
He'd only whispered it to her retreating back.
But when he saw her hesitate just barely before taking her next step, he knew she'd heard.
She stopped and, though she didn't turn, made sure it would reach his ears only.
"I wish I could."
"We're alive."
For some reason, this came as a surprise to her.
"We made it."
His whole life, he'd wanted nothing but this, and now, it really was his.
Theirs.
They'd made that dream come true.
Together.
Only together.
And this time, as they embraced, there was no need for words.
A/N: The lyrics in the song that jumped out at me the most: "I wouldn't even try/But I think you could save my life". I'm going to be horribly cliché here and say that part of me finds that whole "I can't live without you" idea terribly romantic, but another part of me says that we can; we just don't want to. But if push comes to shove, you really do have to go on.
Hopefully, though, you can bring the other with you.
