A/N: The song is called 'Miss You Love' by Maria Mena
Katie bit her lip as she and Alicia started to play the intro. Quite a few students' heads went up at the slow rhythm that sang through the room. Most of the regulars had looks of recognition on their faces.
Looks that said, 'Hey, that's Katie Bell. She's the owner of the club.'
Katie looked back down at the piano as she opened her mouth…
I've run out
complicated theories
so now I'm taking back my words
I'm
preparing for the breakdown
They fought a lot, she and Oliver. Every time, Katie felt like she needed to steel herself. But this time, when the fight came to a head, Oliver apparated to Spain with the rest of his teammates for an away game.
Before he'd left, he said they should talk when he came back. That it was for the best.
Your t-shirt lost
its smell of you
and the bathroom's still a mess
Remind me why
we decided this was for the best...
There were things all over the bathroom floor from Katie 'putting away' a bottle of Aspirin using her wand during the fight. Katie couldn't even go in there. She had to use the hall's half-bath. Every time she went into their shared bathroom, she'd think about the things they had said to each other and she would start crying.
She didn't have Oliver to sooth her. His ways of making her feel better - using loving words and his unique smell of soap and broom polish – weren't there this time. For awhile, she could calm herself a bit by falling asleep in one of his shirts. But the ones she still had with her had begun to lose his scent.
Because I miss you love
Katie kept her eyes focused on the piano keys as Alicia played the guitar next to her. Any time Katie's eyes would start to fog over, she would concentrate a little harder and the fog would dissipate some.
I know the distance
is a factor
but I stretch as often as I can
I hope to reach
your hands any day now
With Oliver being so far away, Katie couldn't even bring herself to think of ways to make it better. She knew apparating there wouldn't do them any good, and without being able to reach him, thinking of him was torture.
Please don't blame
me for trying,
to fix this one last time
I have a hard time as
it is
She knew it was hard for him, too. He'd been in love with her for much longer than they'd been together. Constantly trying to fix what had already been shattered once took a toll on him.
But she couldn't imagine her life without him.
Because I miss you love
But things were different.
Don't act like you
don't know me
It's still me, I haven't changed
I'll be here
when you come back
She was more closed off to him than she had been when everything started.
In this last fight, he'd called her cold. She'd snapped at him, defending herself of course. But deep down, she knew he was right. She had become colder. She'd become distant. She was petrified of getting hurt.
And I miss you love.
A tear rolled down her cheek as the last chords of the song rolled through the room. Katie stood from the piano and walked off of the stage without looking up.
She had only taken a few steps away from the stage when she was stopped by a solid body. A body she knew very well.
Katie slowly raised her gaze and came face to face with Oliver. Another tear rolled down her cheek.
Oliver turned his face away for a moment, taking a deep breath. He then pulled her into his arms and kissed the top of her head.
Katie knew they needed to talk. She knew that Oliver was calming her so they could. But for the second Katie was content to pretend that everything was as it had once been.
Happy, full, and warm.
