Author's Notes: Mami and Kyoko's relationship isn't really touched upon in the anime, and I wanted to write an unorthodox pairing, so that's how this introspective drabble came out. Mostly just practice, I guess.

Anamnesis.

Mami Tomoe died yesterday.

It doesn't take long for the news to travel to Kyoko's ears, and it certainly surprises her, but she isn't quite sure how to feel. She doesn't even know if she and Mami could be called friends.

Mami had always been kind to her, welcoming her and treating her to dinner several times. Looking back, though, Kyoko isn't sure she has ever thought of the older girl in any context outside of food. No one could blame her, though: Mami made the most luscious desserts, cakes and pies and custards, and never hesitated to share them with the redheaded girl. It was like a slice of heaven. Every time Kyoko entered Mami's apartment, the smell of something delicious cooking always filled the room, making her mouth water.

It was probably only because of the desserts, Kyoko reflects, that she never attempted to seize Mami's territory. They had somewhat of an unspoken agreement—food in exchange for peace.

She sighs and leans back, her arms resting behind her head, to watch the stars twinkling in the night sky. A few yards away, Kyubey watches her intently with his familiar glowing red eyes, swishing his tail back and forth.

"So you're going to take over?" he chirps.

"Yeah." Kyoko pops a chip into her mouth and shrugs, deep in thought. Maybe gaining control of Mami's territory will somehow honor the girl. She doesn't know why, but a part of her admires the older girl—always considerate, always doing the noble thing. At times it had disgusted her, but now she thinks that Mami was too nice, too honorable to deserve the grueling life of a magical girl.

Whatever. Kyoko sweeps those thoughts out of her mind and gets to her feet. But for just a second, an unbidden image of Mami pops into her head, with her perpetual cheerful smile and sunny outlook, and Kyoko allows herself a brief moment to mourn.

Then she straightens her posture and raises her head, picks up her spear, and starts on her way to Mitakihara to take over the territory of the dead golden-haired girl.
