It's a strange feeling, suddenly the amount Helheim poison has tripled – probably more than that, in all truthfulness – inside his veins. He probably should be dead, or some sort of vine or just be losing his mind and going on a rampage in the empty city.
Instead, he is walking calmly out on the cluttered town of abandoned buildings and rubble, looking and thinking as human as the day he was born.
Hase had been desperate and thus, control had eluded him before he'd even seen the fruit. He wasn't weak though – Kaito sees that now. There was no weakness in his decision to eat the fruit, though he knew nothing of its consequences. He had been desperate. He was desperate to be by the side of someone he treasured.
Someone like Jonouchi.
Someone like Mai.
He stops, staring back at himself through a window. He remembers when, not too long ago, the glass reflected someone else. Someone who dared to be positive as the world spiraled towards a definite end. Someone who even as her friends dared to kill each other, stood by them and the hope that they would reunite once again, someday.
A hope that was probably why she died.
I'm sorry, Kaito, she's... already...
It's filling him up, the power, the darkness inside of him and it can not be contained. Kaito screams, loud and long and the power of Helheim does the same. Vines go everywhere, with shadows right behind them, planting seeds there for more evil to spread through. The window breaks, but Kaito can still feel it...can still feel the emptiness brought on by her.
Mai...
Takatsukasa Mai didn't deserve to die. All she had ever wanted was to dance, ever since she was a little girl and Kaito had watched her practicing under The Tree. Long before the Invess Game, long before the Beat Riders – it was her dream before ANY of this had happened.
She did not deserve to die for somebody else's nightmare.
His throat was burning, else Kaito would've gone till the sun went down. He reigns The Power in with what ragged breaths he takes in and when he has some semblance of a hold on himself, stands tall.
Kaito will not vow vengeance for her, he will not save the world in her name. The world is in shambles at this point and that's not who he is.
But he will remember her. He will remember one of the first friends he ever had.
