"Dammit!", was the only word that escaped Gai's mouth when he ran out of his house. Today was the day he started high school, and he started it by oversleeping and rushing to the bus stop.
"Move your ass Gai!", the teen yelled to himself, "Koenma helped you out, so you better not screw it up!"
As the boy rounded the corner he saw an old run down bus picking up a kid who wore a green jacket and khakis, the same uniform Gai had stored in his backpack.
"Aw crap! Hey hold the door will ya?!", the boy yelled, hoping the student would take pity on him as he dashed down the street. Thankfully, the boy heard Gai's pleas and kept the bus at the stop long enough for the tardy teen to board. As Gai finally caught his breath, he took the seat across the aisle from the kid that saved his ass.
"Hey, thanks for the help man. I owe you one!", Gai said as he held his hand out, showing his appreciation.
"No problem! My name's Tsukune Aono, but Tsukune's fine!", the newly named Tsukune said, shaking Gai's outstretched hand.
"Nice to meet you Tsukune, the name's Genkai Urameshi, Gai for short!"
"Urameshi? Hey wait, you mean like the ramen shop?"
"Yeah, that's my dad's place. Hey, when we get back swing on by! I'll cook you up a bowl on the house!"
As Tsukune looked at the boy, the first thing he noticed was that he wasn't wearing Yokai's school uniform. Instead, his attire was made up of a white t-shirt, jeans, white sneakers, and a brown bomber looking jacket, whereas his backpack was nothing more that a sack that was swung over his shoulder. He had to admit that the kid looked kind of like a punk. His slicked back hair added to this thought.
"Hey, you are going to Yokai Academy, right?", Tsukune asked, wondering if they had the same destination.
"Yeah, why? Is it cause I'm not wearing the uniform? Don't worry, I'll put it on once we get there", Gai said as he smiled.
"Hey, Tsukune, have you been to this place?"
"No, sorry, I was going to ask you the same thing actually.", Tsukune said, rubbing the back of his head.
"So, what made you want to go to Yokai in the first place? Did you hear about it or something?", Gai asked, wanting to get as much information as possible on this place.
"Yeah right!", Tsukune sighed, "My dad is the one who got me here in the first place."
"How so?", Gai asked. Tsukune went on to tell Gai how his father had acquired a place for him at the mysterious Yokai Academy.
"Jeez, your dad didn't even question why a creep like that had a registration form to a high school?, Gai asked with a laugh.
"Nope, he basically saw a blessing when it happened", at this point Tsukune looked a bit sad, "If I had passed those entrance exams, there'd have been no need for him to grab it..."
"Yeah, I know what you mean!", Gai exclaimed with a laugh, "I'm sort of in the same boat, but you might've caught on by the way I look. I mean I don't have that 'smart and preppy' style going for me!"
"Wait, you failed your exams?!", Tsukune yelled.
"Big time! Mom and dad were pissed when I told them, dad even said he was gonna kill me!", Gai said with a laugh.
"So how did you get into Yokai?", Tsukune asked.
"Well, turns out that my boss knows the headmaster to this school, so I guess I kinda lucked out!", Gai said, silently thanking Koenma for his help.
"Wouldn't your boss be upset? I mean you going to far away from work and all."
"No way! My cousin worked with me over there, so he's still gonna be there. And hey, I'll still work from school if he needs me to.", Gai said with a smile on his face.
"So what did you guys do?"
"Me and Kira worked for a detective agency, we'd go around and solve problems whenever the boss had a job for us. It's hard work, but it was fun!", Gai recited.
'I mean, it's not a total lie...', he thought to himself.
"Woah! Will your cousin be alright by himself?", Tsukune asked, worried for the now lone detective.
"Without a doubt. If Kira Kuwabara is anything, he's a damn good detective!", Gai said, pride lining his voice, "Listen Tsukune, it was fun talking, but I think I'm gonna catch up on some sleep. Wake me when we're there?"
"Y-yeah sure!", Tsukune said, assuring the boy.
With that, Gai got comfortable and slowly drifted off to sleep. The boy across from his then started thinking to himself.
'I mean, he is rough around the edges, but he seems like a nice enough guy. Maybe we could be friends, I mean, we don't know anyone yet so...'

"Gai, wake up, we're here!", Tsukune said, disturbing the boys nap.
"Geez, alright I'm up.", the delinquent said, rubbing his eyes,"That felt short as hell. Thanks for waking me."
"Sure no problem!", Tsukune said
As the boys walked of the bus, they thanked the driver, only to hear a warning from him.
"Be careful, this is one scary ass school."
"Yeah yeah, thanks for the ride old man!" Gai said, ready to walk towards the campus.
"You need to watch yourself too, Spirit Detective...", the strange man replied.
"...The hell you just say?", Gai asked curious as to how he knew what he was.
The man said nothing more and closed the doors, driving away from the pair.
'Freaky, did Koenma tell that guy about me? No, probably not...'
As the boys walked toward the campus, the came towards a dead forest which had gave stones scattered around.
"Huh, this is creepy as hell.",Gai said, taking note of the graves,"What kind of school did you send me to Koenma?"
"D-do you think those are real?", Tsukune asked his new friend.
"Who knows? Let's hurry up and get to the campus though.",Gai replied.
As the pair walked Gai wondered what this school was. He knew those graves were real, and while they were walking to the forest he felt on edge, as if something was watching him and Tsukune. Before Gai could figure out where this feeling was coming from, he saw his friend get ran over by a pink-haired girl on her bike. As Tsukune fell, the girl was flung his way at breakneck speed. This was going to be a weird ass school year, wasn't it?
