He opened his eyes in the dark place. All he could smell was decay all around him. Where was he?
Oh yes, the Ministry. David Hanson's eyes studied the unshaven man in the mirror before him. The fraught eyes, the hollowed cheeks. It was a face that had once been handsome but time and a soldier's hard life had worn it away. Now it just looked desperate.
" David, right?" The voice that interrupted his thoughts was young, light. Hanson turned to see a boy, no a young man approaching him.
Slim, pale haired, pretty as a girl – the montage of impressions struck Hanson. He studied the young man – the porcelain cheeks, the wide grey eyes, feeling hot and uncomfortable. Jet lag, no doubt.
"I'm Chris Thorne," said the girl-pretty young man, extending a hand. Hanson took the hand, feeling the fragility of the bones beneath the soft skin, "Let me show you around."
And Chris walked away, clearly expecting Hanson to follow which he did. Feeling stupid, Hanson trailed after him, trying to ignore the gnawing in his stomach as he noticed the contrast where the tender white skin met the thick hair at the nape of the other man's neck.
