Forever Gone
Here is the first chapter of my not very good story.
Chapter One
Kagome trudged back to the village with many others, she couldn't remember who they were, who she was. An old woman wearing an eye patch was talking to her but what was being said was incomprehensible. She could see the woman's mouth form words, yet she couldn't understand what they were.
She felt she didn't know this woman but part of her soul knew she did. She didn't know who the little fox-boy was, who the strange men were, her eyes searched over the small crowd of faces till she saw someone she did know, or knew.
Two men were carrying a lifeless body on a bamboo stretcher. The figure had long black hair which was once silver, he should have dog ears but he had turned mortal, this person's eyes were closed.
"Inuyasha…" Kagome's mouth formed the name yet she did not say it aloud, suddenly she remembered who she was and why she was here. Some were crying, Kagome wished she could cry too and it would all be over; she wouldn't have to remember what had happened.
She couldn't cry, she couldn't do anything, she just felt so numb. This was a funeral procession of friends of the deceased. Someone was chanting words, Kagome vaguely recognised some words being said;
May his soul… eternal peace,
That… rest forever… journey ends here…
She stared at the body of the man, or whatever he was, she had loved him… Fired was spread over the body and it was burnt, slowly. He couldn't be dead, this was all just a dream… This couldn't have happened, not after those words he had said…
Kagome and Inuyasha stared into the flames of the fire, they didn't talk, every now and then their eyes would meet. Kagome felt her hand moving on it's own, taking hold of Inuyasha's rough one.
Inuyasha turned towards Kagome, his eyes showed feelings of confusion… "Why do you… hold my hand?" he asked her. Kagome blushed, "It's what people do… when they care for one another…" Inuyasha stood up and pulled her along with him.
They stood underneath a tree facing the moon which was glowed brightly. Kagome faced Inuyasha, his silver hair moved slightly in the breeze. She brushed it away from his face, and he turned towards her. "The moon," he whispered, "When I look at it, I think of you…"
Kagome stood up on her tiptoes and kissed him lightly on the lips.
She knew it shouldn't be like this, Inuyasha shouldn't be dead, it all didn't seem real… She couldn't recall that well how it happened, it was… it happened so fast…
"Kagome stay back!" Inuyasha yelled, he turned towards the beast. It flew at him with open talons, "You think that's gonna stop me?" Inuyasha growled. Suddenly, Inuyasha's hair started to turn black and one word was uttered before the bird-monster plunged it's talons into Inuyasha's skin; "No."
Kagome stared into the flames which swallowed up the body, he looked so peaceful now. Maybe he was peaceful, maybe he could finally rest, forever…
Inuyasha's mortal form lay in Kagome's arms, she knew he was dying, and he knew it too. "Kagome…" he whispered, "I just… I just want you to know…" whatever Inuyasha was trying to say obviously was burdening him. "What is it, Inuyasha?" she asked him softly.
"I just want you to know, that… That I love you…" Inuyasha looked up at her, "I love you too…" Kagome whispered, his eyelids flickered then closed, the mighty half-demon warrior was finally put to rest…
Kagome knew that it would end, she always knew that. But like this? She couldn't believe it, she was hurting, hurting inside, the pain wouldn't go away. Had she really loved him? Yes, she still did. Her heart ached for Inuyasha, he could always make things better. But now, he had lost himself.
She knew that today she would leave this time, she would leave and never come back.
