Chapter one

There used to be one mirror in my house. Well, it was until my father slammed his fist into it and it shattered. That was the day my older brother left, and my dad became violent. It will be exactly a year ago tomorrow. I was weak in the beginning, but not so much anymore. The faction I'm from is abnegation. They believe in selflessness. I love the way they help each other and how willing they are to help the factionless. I know my dad has had it rough, but he is a monster. Not a true abnegation. It's ironic that he's the second most powerful leader. So I told my friend Margret.

She is my best friend and we tell each other everything. She has scarlet hair and green eyes. She's a little shorter than me about 5'5" and freckles on her pale skin. I learned when we were seven that her brother left the factions and became factionless so we went to him. We didn't tell him why we needed to protect ourselves, and he didn't ask. I learned simple blocks the first day of self-defense. It didn't help. He wiped me with his belt. I learned to fight, shoot guns, throw knifes and can run and never stop. Nothing helped.

I need to stop thinking about this and go do my chores before he wakes up. I go to the kitchen but when I get there it's not just him he's with Marcus. Marcus is the only one in our entire faction with more power over our faction. I hate him. I hate him. I hate him! Marcus puts his hands on my waist and has an evil glow in his eyes. He says ", Ah my darling Kathy. Have you thought about the arrangement I made with you father last year? Because I think of it every day."

Last year he made an arrangement with my dad that once I was a member I would marry him. In exchange he would appoint my father second in power. He told my dad to keep me in line till then. Like he tried with his son. I nod and say ", yes I have thought of it, but I must leave for school soon or I will be late and I wish not to disturb my class."

He smirks and says ", a true abnegation, huh. Well I'll see you at the choosing ceremony tomorrow."

I simply say ", yes sir." And I am out the door and meet up with Margret and her brother, Jacob. Once we turn the corner the tree of us break out into a sprint and take our usual route. When I run I can escape reality. I can't think and I love the rush. I'm going to love Dauntless. I love their purpose. To protect the week to face the cowards like my father. Margret Jacob and I all have that thought.

When we are half a mile from the school we start to walk. Jacob starts to talk ", Are you ready for today?" right after he asks we all laugh.

"The answers quite obvious isn't it?" I say. Margret says ", and we except each other no matter what happens. Even if one or all of us is divergent we stick together!"

I say "Ok, well enough of that time for us to go to jail! Oh did I say jail I meant school!" we all laugh and say our goodbyes.

I head to my first class. I see a dauntless boy about my age push a littler abnegation boy. I go over to get the little boy out of there. The Dauntless boy has dirty blond hair and sky blue eyes. He is tan and I estimate about 6'2". Right when I get there he is about to throw a punch. I imminently step in front of the flying fist and he throws a right hook into the left side of my jaw. I have been hit so many times it doesn't even faze me. When I turn to see the boy it is a 12 year old named Richard that lives near me. The dauntless that threw the punch and Richard look to be in shock. I turn to Richard and say ", its ok I'm fine. Don't let bullies get to you. There just cowards. Now go to class before you are late and disturb the class."

Richard nods and leaves. I sigh and turn back to the boy with the blond hair. I can't believe he would just hit a little kid like that. ", Now I'll be going to class." I say. I start to leave.

He doesn't really register what's happening. I leave then hear running feet. Blondie is right next to me now. He smiles and says ", where have you been all my life?"

I calmly say ", Hiding from you. Now I have to go to class. Try not to hit anyone when I'm not there to stop you."

He laughs and says ", I have never met an abnegation like you." The corners of my mouth twitch as I say "well you have never met me." And he's speechless. I walk towards math with a determination to just make it to lunch.
