That Smile

By Dejimon Kaizer

Ok, this is my first fanfic, please R and R.

Takato, Lee, and Ruki were just hanging around doing nothing. Lee was making some sort of joke, but Takato wasn't paying attention. Suddenly, Takato heard Ruki laugh. "That is so funny!" she said. Takato had never heard Ruki laugh, but he liked it. It was unusual for her to laugh. Her laugh sounded like, well, Takato wasn't very good at coming up with poetic hyperboles. But he did like her laugh. And that smile was wonderful. It seemed to reach miles. Then Takato felt a little sad. He wished he was the one who made Ruki laugh.
She probably has a crush on Lee. He's more her type, I guess. Maybe I can make a funny joke!
"Hey, guys, do you know why all the numbers are scared of number 7?" asked Takato.
Lee and Ruki stared at him.
"Uh, Takato, that was Lee's joke, remember?" said Ruki.
Takato turned bright red.
"Oh yeah, I knew that."
Lee rolled his eyes, and Terriermon laughed. Takato frowned.
Yeesh. At least someone is laughing.

Soon, Ruki had to go home.
"Say, Takato, it seems you want to be a comedian," said Lee all of a sudden.
"Huh?"
"Sure. You obviously copied my joke so that you could be funny!"
"Uh, Lee, I was trying to make Ruki laugh," said Takato, blushing.
Lee frowned.
"Can't you tell she's not your type? She's my type!"
Takato frowned. He had no idea that Lee liked Ruki.
C'mon, Takato, this is your chance. You can be a man now! No more cry baby!
"Oh, uh, then maybe I should just go home," said Takato weakly.
"Maybe you should," said Lee coolly.

That night, Takato skipped dinner and went straight to bed. When his parents asked what was wrong, he just said that he was feeling sick. In fact, in the morning, when he woke up, he was looking so red (from crying) that his mother kept him home from school.

At the hangout that the three Tamers always went to after school, Ruki and Lee couldn't help but notice that Takato wasn't there.
"I wonder where Takato is," said Ruki.
Lee shrugged.
"He probably just realized he's not good enough for you."
"Huh? What does that mean?"
"Yesterday, after you left, he said that he was trying to make you laugh."
Ruki blushed a little.
"Ha! But I made him realize that it was just me and you."
Ruki frowned at Lee. Lee was too busy laughing to notice the fist that was heading towards his eye.
"I think that was sweet of Takato, and I also think you are a big jerk!" yelled Ruki. Actually, that wasn't her exact words, but I don't like to write swear words.

Ruki ran to Takato's house, and knocked on the door. Takato's mom answered.
"Hi, is Takato here?" asked Ruki.
"Yes, but he's too sick to play outside."
Takato walked out of his bedroom. He had heard Ruki, and really wanted to see her.
"I'm ok now, Ma," he said.
"Are you sure?"
"Yeah, and I really want to go outside."
"Well, ok, but be home by 8."
"Ok, Ma," said Takato rushing outside.

As soon as Takato got close enough to Ruki, she immediately grabbed his hand.
"How are you doing, Takato?" asked Ruki.
Takato was sweating and was bright red.
This must be some sort of dream.
And then, Takato knew it must be a dream. Ruki laughed. And she had that smile. That smile.
